That's just a label for dealers to sell them for 40.00 more...

They are all pretty much just Avicularia sp.

One dealer will sell it as 20.00 as A. avicularia, then another will sell the same variation as A. metallica for 40-50.00 +...

Then yet another will probably call it something else.... maybe sell it for even more. Who knows what is what?

I obtained it as 'A. metallica', stupidly enough i believed it was what i bought it as... A. metallica, until i educated myself on the subject, now i see how truly screwed up the whole Avicularia sp. ordeal really is. I want to try and get a MM that is identical to this girl from the same source, so then i can call them something different so the variation sticks around. It truly is a beautiful species, whatever it may really be...

:p

If you bought it as an A. metallica then you should probably keep it labeled as A. metallica. As for breeding... If your not sure what it is then why are you wanting to breed it? You are saying the genus is way screwed up but if you think about it your not really making it better. You are actually continuing to make it worse -- "so then i can call them something different so the variation sticks around. " :? :?

What i was trying to say is i wanted to get a male of the same variation and then breed them to keep this variation around. There is constantly A. avicularia or A. metallica going around, all look different, god only knows what is what... but if we take males and females from the same shipments why cant we breed those and keep the variation around? I do not see the need to label them as A. metallica and keep the confusion going around as to what is what. Why not just label them Avicularia sp. "Type 1", Avicularia sp. "Type 2", and so on??

Maybe I am not even interested in getting rid of any? Maybe i just want to breed them for the simple fact of doing it... and in which case what i call them is meaningless anyways :D, hell, i can call them all 'Bob' and i don't think anybody would mind hehe...

Has certainly been done with other taxa--dart frogs, for instance.

I meant to imply that it has been accepted practice with some other taxa, not that it was frowned upon (altho there is always dissension from some). For instance, shipments of dart frogs come in for which species ID's are unclear; hobbyists chose to breed only amongst members of a given shipment (or more than one shipment from the exact same locale, if such can be verified) as the best choice for maintaining the imports in the hobby...

Jade your safest bet in cases like this is to breed siblings.
