ok so I live in Wichita, Kansas unfortunately lol, anyway, my local exotic pet store choices are a single Exotic Pets, a single Scales and Tails,or a handful of different petcos and petsmarts. Well I’m constantly going into exotic pets, since it is the closest, and I spend way too much money on their tarantulas especially their sling collection. I’m always excited to see what they’ve got new in stock and usually it’s so small that I wouldn’t be able to tell if it was or wasn’t whatever they have it labeled as. So I wanna say it’s been about two months since I purchased a sling from Exotic Pets that was labeled purple tree spider/purple Pink toe So what comes to mind is Avicularia purpurea right? Well then I go into Exotic Pets this weekend and I see purple pink toe /A.p. So I’m also thinking this must be another purple Pink toe. Curious to see what this one looks like I asked to see it and come to my surprise it looks nothing like the one I had purchased two months ago, mine is all dark brown/black solid no other colors. The 2nd has all black and it’s got gray stripes on the abdomen. So I did some checking and the 2nd one (I ended up buying it as well) I bought was probably the real Avicularia purpurea. Which leaves me with one question, what is the first sling I bought? Any ideas? I thought maybe an Avicularia sp Peru but my sling doesn’t look like one of those, so I’m really quite confused. If I need to post pics I can.

Only the store you bought it from is going to be able to tell you that with certainty.

What did you use to determine the species?

Gonna have to post pics to be sure. From the sounds of things the first one could be just a regular Avic Avic. The second one does sound much more like a Purpurea.

Make sure you post them in the tarantula identification forum! The forum description or a pinned post usually has instructions on how to take pictures to help you get the best answers possible.

Also check the genus and species specific threads in the tarantula photos forum for comparison. And make sure you include the size of your sling (diagonal leg span) along with any pictures.

No pics needed- we will read your mind

You have more exotic stores than some people on the coasts!

I don't think there's an exotic pet store with arachnids in the entire state of ND.

"Purple tree spider" is also a commonly used name for Tapinauchenius violaceus. Common names... I've been helping the exotics guy at my local pet shop learn the scientific terminology, and I won't buy a T from him until he can tell me the genus and species. Making progress in baby steps.
