Hello Arachnoboard community,

I am extremly interested in the Atrax robustus spider. I have been for many years. I've made the decision to make the committment to responsibly house/keep one.

Can someone please private message me leads for legally aquiring this spider (possible exotic traders).

I'm well aware of their toxicity and the dangers of keeping. I'm only asking for information regarding professionals that have this genus/species. Thank you,

If you dont live in Aussie then you arent going to get one. Im pretty sure they will not ship something like a Sydney funnel web over here on a plane or ship.. I looked into getting one before. Trust me you dont need a A.robustus, there are many otehr funnel webs that are just as cool and not nearly as dangerous, I'd say your best bet is to look into getting one of those. I no its cool and all with those huge deadly fangs but its kinda over kill for a collection when there are other just as good if not better species out there.

Australia has banned all exportation of Atrax/ Hadronyche species, except for academic, medical, and zoological institutions.

However...if you don't mind having virtually a clone of the A/H funnelwebs, but without the ludicrous toxicity, then take a look at our Macrothele funnelwebs. They ARE Hexathelids, and so are very closely related to the Australasian f-webs, but with a much milder toxin ( still not to be sneezed at, but not known to be life-threatening ).

Macrothele is listed under Todd's "Highly venomous spiders" category, mainly as a precaution. We have no reason to believe that they are as toxic as their cousins, but we are fairly certain they will have an unpleasant bite. That's about all we know. They're going to cause a fair bit of pain and suffering if you are bitten, maybe some other symptoms, but they won't kill you. Not terribly serious...but serious still. ( we think ). They are probably at least as toxic as Gorgyrella trapdoor spiders, which hurt badly. Bottom line? Play it on the safe side, and be careful anyway.

I have macrothele calpieana and they are way cool man....heavy webbers abd aggressive. My two breeding pairs are 3" for the females and 2.5" for the males....I have witnessed breeding many times . They have been together for about a month. Like I said these are a very cool spider and the gem of my collection.
I will release the babies for the same price Graham did .
Venom...if you would like to see a pair I will bring a pair to the show in Taylor for your viewing enjoyment

If getting a hot spider is what you're after, you can try and find some Phoneutria. They are obtainable, but difficult to find in the US.

I dont think it's a good idea to get a spider for the main reason of it being venomous... start with a hot scorpion before you buy a really aggressive highly venomous spider.

Do you mean the Oct 11th, or Nov 8th show? I just checked the Taylor show's site, and it lists you as a dealer. Are you bringing herps, or mainly inverts?

Hehe, that's what I was hoping to hear: bugs, lotsa bugs :D .

I'll try to get to one of the shows. I had something semi-planned for the 11th , but we'll see. If not the October, then probably the November show. Either way, I'll let you know in advance. Thanks for the offer! I'd love to see Macrothele in person!

Thank you for all the informative replies. I thought I had read somewhere that Australia had a strict export policy. I thought maybe there might be some collectors who have succeeded in a captive breeding program (still hoping).

I definetly will check out your link Venom - thank you for that!
