What are all of the different scientific names & common names for this species. I have found several & now Im confused. I would like to do some research on him/her but am finding it hard using the search engine with so many different names. Would like to find a deffinate name for him/her. Kim

The only two names I have seen are Fort Hall Baboon and Dodoma, but as you said there might be many more. As for the scientific name, the only name now is the one you mention (the genus was established since 1897). But in general, the common names are a mess; the same spider can have several, and different species can have the same name. In my country there are innumerable species and trying to identify them by common name is hopeless, people just call them "black", "brown", "gueras" (blonde), etc. IMO you should just stick to Pterinochilus lugardi.

That helped me alot! I had not ever heard of the Fort Hall before I got this guy & it was on the top of the container he was in. I thought maybe is was innacurate, I guess not. I have seen in several threads this species even labeled as an OBT, of which I do not want at all due to the fastness of them. I will just stay with the latin name & see what I come up with now. Thanks for the help! Kim

P.lugardis can haul off at a good clip as well. When mine hits the turbo boosters she can move faster than my brain can process.
Mine, thankfully, only runs for cover so far though.

nexen is right. There is no difference in the speed of both species and both are moderately aggressive (if trying desperately to survive can be called aggressive). But they are beautiful spiders and a joy to watch if not to handle.

Mine also was labeled "Fort Hall Baboon" and I, too, thought it was incorrect... but when I got home and researched, I was surprised to find out that it's actually a common name for the species.

I stick to calling her a P. lugardi though.. it just avoids confusion that way!

So is the lugardi an OBT or is an OBT a general term for all baboons or for a specific one? I had heard somewhere that OBT was a color form? It seems I get more confused the more I research. I read all of the pages on this & 2 other forums on lugardi & learned alot except everyone has a different name for it. Ugh!

The OBT is a different species, but is a member of the same genus as lugardi.

yes I believe it stands for orange baboon tarantula. another name for the "red color form" (though its more orange) usumbara baboon tarantula, or P. murinus. (so not P. lugardi. which was pointed out earlier. :))

I call my OBT the "Orange Baboon Terrorist." {D Yes, my OBT is so nasty, it's afraid of it's own shadow!!!! Honestly, I have not seen my OBT in weeks. It webbed up it's hide, and won't come out. The Web of Doom keeps swallowing crickets, so I know it's still alive...that's always good!!! :D

Best. Line. Ever. {D {D {D

But that is coming from someone who named a T "Esod" (Evil Spider of Doom) {D

My OBT is NOT that bad! He was a jerk during his cage change, but was manageable! Now that I've got two more slings, I'm wondering how they'll grow up lol Though really, my OBT is still a juvie and could get more vile with age... doesn't matter, I still I LOVE this genus! My chordatus is more vile than any of them at the moment though

It's funny looking back on when I first started researching Ts when I was 10/11 years old... I saw a picture of what I now know is an OBT, only it was labeled "togo starburst" and I made up my mind - I WANTED one! Until I started searching 'togo starburst' and kept getting pictures of white Ts, and not the pretty orange one I wanted! It took me awhile to figure out what it was that I was really looking at, but then I was too scared to get one LOL Moral of the story is.. common names suck most of the time! Scientific names keep things straight.. most of the time lol
