for those that keep snakes, what would you recommend as a substrate, would you recommend aspen or walnut shell as a substrate?

this is for my display tank, otherwise i normally keep them on paper towels.

thanks

aspen, stay away from the small granule loose substrates with snakes.

You want to stay away from any substrate the snake could ingest while consuming its food.

I use old towels or newspaper... I don't like risking substrate being ingested by my snakes...I spent to much money on them:D

like i said before, it's for my display tank. I heard that calcium sand is good. because western hognose are found around the sandy area and they love to burrow.

also, i will be feeding them in a separate tank.

some people use indoor out door carpet for the bottom of their display cages because it is inexpensive, can be easily cleaned and comes in a variety of colors and looks good.Just another idea.

thanks, that's not a bad idea either. I recently went to a hognose forum and did some reading on what people keep their hognose on, and people are going with sand mostly because the snake like to burrow in them.

aside from trying to make it looks good, i will be going with calci sand because the snake likes to burrow in them.

thanks for all the inputs tho

i wouldn't use walnut or aspen. newspaper or a herp approved bedding is the way to go imo.

i use aspen for mine. i would avoid sand. just because you aren't feeding in there doesn't mean it will end up in its mouth.

indoor/outdoor carpet holds bacteria.

I use newspaper for most of mine, coco fiber also seems to work very well.

I use aspen for my western hognose, and he has created all kinds of cool tunnels in it. I wouldn't use sand, or walnut shell, for any snake.
