I'm not sure what other states have them but the only armadillos your likely to see in Fla are the ones smashed on the side of the road. Well, this morning I was on my way to close the gate to let the dogs out and I happened to see one running around our yard, so I followed it around and found out where their den is located (under our 2 sheds out back). I thought it was just one but by the time I left there was around 5 I think. Anywho, here are some pictures and 2 videos I took of them =D

Sandcranes:

Ninja armadillo:

Grey squirrel:

Armadillo:

Very cool. I've seen them DOTR from Texas to Fla and had to forbid my renter in Fla from attempting to poison them because they were digging up the yard.
I thought about trying to live trap one and keep it but I just could not bring myself to do it.

yep , you would not believe how many customers tell me they want the dillo dead.
Those and Gopher tortoises, allot of horse owners DESPISE them because apparently horses break their legs in Gopher tortoise/dillo holes.

Those are so cool. I've never seen on in person. I always wondered what they would feel like. I wish we could keep them as pets here.

They are funny critters, they walk right up to you sometimes if you stand still and bump you, they get distracted while foraging.

but ime they have a really quirky immune system and do not do well in captivity. The baby mortality is high.

yep plenty of 9 banded in Texas, and they are believed to be the only significant natural reservoir of leprosy apart from humans, there are some (though few) armadillo-to-human transmissions that have been reported, though fewer than 5 percent of wild armadillos have it (though there are 30-50 million armadillos in the US so thats a fairly large number). Just some information here, let us know if your nose falls off j/k.

They say the same thing about Prairie Dogs and their holes here in Colorado but to date I have yet to see an animal it happened to. Heck I have yet to meet the Rancher who says they have seen it and I had a ranch for 20 years so I know a few ranchers.
I believe it dates back to the days of open ranges and stampedes.

I just had a pair of armadillos parade around my back porch the other night. They were knocking on our sliding glass door, then went over to a weight set we have on the porch and jumped on the tarp that was draped over it until it fell off. I opened the sliding glass door and they tried to run in. Hilarious little critters. I love 'em.

within their group, to MY knowledge there has been no proven dillo to human cases. I handle them regularly, I'd wave hi to ya but I dont have any fingers:liar:

I work up at the Luray Zoo and we have three of them. They are very sweet animals. They feel like extremely rough skin with bits of long hair every where. They also feel like they have segments on their backs. They are great animals for the kids to play with. Sometimes we set up a 6 by 6 fenced area with the armadillos so kids can come in and play with them. Of course the kids are supervised! They have the weirdest tounges. They smell insects on your shoes and suck the shoes. They always run around busily with their noses to the ground looking for insects. They will occassionally stand up on their back legs sniffing the air. Dillos can't bite fingers because their mouths are too small and their teeth are too far back. They are very fun to work with, everyone who spends a second with them loves the dillos.

"Human and Armadillo Leprosy" An Interpretive Summary CAPT Richard W. Truman, Ph.D. DHHS/HRSA/BPHC Division of National Hansen's Disease Programs Baton Rouge, La.
• 1 in 6 armadillos found in Texas and Louisiana coastal marshes harbor leprosy
• The disease may be completely absent among animals in better drained areas
• Leprosy has evolved among armadillos by natural means and is likely present among armadillos in similar environments in other countries
• Human and armadillo leprosy infections show similar environmental tendencies in their geographical distribution
• Some cases of human disease probably result from zoonotic transmission from armadillos, but the real risk for leprosy infection through contact with armadillos seems to be extremely low. At this time, most people in the U.S. still appear to acquire their disease mainly through contact with infected family members

Armadillos are cute as hell. I was hoping to see some live ones when I was in Louisiana last year - saw at least two dozen dead ones, no live ones though.
