Anyone here keep one or a few and have any stories?

And some questions.

Some breeders claim that brumation is needed every year and that tegus must be born in the Northern hemisphere in order to breed. true?

How would they survive in South America if they had to be born in the Northern Hemisphere to breed?

must be born in the Northern hemisphere to breed in the North, of course.(i.e, imported tegus will not work)

well, obviously some tegus born in the southern hemisphere were able to breed in the northern hemisphere, or else we wouldn't have them here. I think its possible, but probably not easy to breed WC imports. I don't see why that would matter, though, since these guys breed well enough that there are tons of CBs around.

We have two males, so obviously no experience with breeding yet.

Neither of them are full grown yet. Spike is our bigger boy, and he's got some major attitude problems.

Righty is our special needs boy. His jaw is deformed, so he can only open his mouth towards the right side. He can only eat smaller food items, and has grown a lot smaller than normal, but is otherwise healthy. He's my scaly puppy, very cuddly. He's starting to show some aggression with food (as well as associating my hand with food, yikes!), so I'm cutting back on whole prey, and switching him over to raw meats (and of course, veggies. He loves his greens!).

Are yours indoors or outdoors? Supposedly they do quite well in milder climates(so long the summers warm up enough) outdoors, hibernating as they would naturally for most of the year.

they are indoors for now. They are my sister's, and when she has her own house again, they will be building outdoor enclosures.

The boys both brumated over the winter. They were being kept in the garage (we get pretty mild winters here in southern california), so they experienced a temp drop. While it wasn't intentionally done for breeding purposes or anything, it didn't hurt.

Yeah, the guy at Agamainternational hibernates his through snow, so if anything you'd have to make sure things stay cold enough for the to hibernate.

I'm pretty sure both our boys came from that guy, actually... I think that's where our local reptile store gets their tegus from.
