Are urticating hairs visible on skin?

I was wondering if urticating hairs were visible on skin and if you could pull them out like splinters. The reason is because I’ve had two little splinter things recently that randomly appeared. I could easily take them out but it didn’t itch or rash just hurt to touch. It looked brownish/reddish. The only T’s I have is a apho chalcodes, GBB, and c versi. Is it possible it could be from one of them? I assume not just curious. It could also just be pieces of leaf or something from making substrates.
Oh and another question, do urticating hairs float up in the air? Like can they go up and then just float and move with airflow. Wouldn’t that make it dangerous for your face? Or do they just kinda fall down after a bit.

I’m alergic I’ll break out in Hives if enough are directly on my skin . And there microscopic barbs like harpoons very hard to remove. Some people use duct tape, I have to use allergy pills.
wear gloves if your worried.
A thread I made on this topic.

Dang, so do you think my tarantulas were the culprit to the “splinters”? They were both on my hands and looked exactly like the example pic from spooky. they were in strange spots on my hands that wouldn’t make sense if they came from wood or substrate debris. But maybe they did, they were both identical though and kinda appeared without even feeling them.
it would make sense I got it from my gbb because she webbed up the whole enclosure and opening the lid sends strings of web in the air. Soooo…

have you guys heard of any hair in eyes or mouth stories?

There are plenty of uricating hair response threads if you search. People have gotten them everywhere. Sometimes pets will get them and it's a terrible experience.

I've trained my cats to not even go near my T's. I cat proof their enclosures and shelves and keep them in a separate room that's only open when I'm in it, but I still train them to avoid my snakes and insects and animals like the plague for their own safety.

I can almost certainly say those "splinters" were either wood splinter fragments from your substrate or uricating hairs from your T.

In my case it was an uricating hair. You can actually see near the end of the video when it kicks it into my finger. That finger was the closest thing besides the tong to the T.

Some people react like Ultumz... very badly due to an allergic reaction. I'm constantly fighting allergies, so my body was like "what's this noise? ignore it" I plucked it out with a tweezer and went on with my business unaffected by even a little itch.

The hairs get worse as they get physically larger. Their microscopic structure is pretty gnarly. The larger the T, the larger the hair, the more effect it'll have.

I use my firearm safety goggles and a mask whenever I do insect stuff.

Watch your eyes, don't breathe or blow into your substrate as you could kick up and inhale hairs. Make sure to use the appropriate safety equipment if necessary. If you don't have safety goggles you can probably ask your high school science teacher for a pair. That's how I got my first free pair decades ago.

SAFETY FIRST

Most effective method for removing urticating substances.
Laundry detergent instead of soap.
1. It coats everything including the substance, hairs, or much more commonly fiberglass dust and similar.
2. Causes the substance to lose it's grip in your skin.
3. It's an emollient, causing your skin to absorb moisture which aids it getting the substance loose as it softens the skin.
Follow up with a gentle Scotch Brite or similar pot scrubber. The abrasive in the pot scrubber is able to penetrate the detergent coating and grab the hairs. Scrub gently in all directions being certain to scrub well outside the hives affected area to remove the unattached substances.
Rinse thoroughly while continuing scrubbing until all soap is removed. Rinse pot scrubber as well then repeat.
Physicians, dermatologists use a special soap formula which essentially does the same thing as the laundry detergent.

With strongly embedded substances you may need to use an antihistamine first to reduce edema, swelling, which tends to trap the substance in your skin.
