you won't see them often. mine only come out of their burrows when they are hungry.

Yes. It's often recommended to use about 15cm (or more) of substrate. I would probably recommend more than 15cm based on my experiences (even take it as far as 20cm), although the female with her brood seems to be doing fine.

If you keep them like the local pet shop here, on 0.5cm of gravel, they won't burrow. But I doubt if that's really healthy. As far as I know it's a burrow species, and taking away that option might result in more stress.
