Hoorah, the new camera (the light and affordable Lumix FZ-7) arrived today as did the Raynox M-150 macro converter lens. The image is only really cropped on the sides.

Here is a flash shot of "Sophie II", the garden cross spider that moved in with us more than 2 months ago. I thought she was almost dead a couple days ago; she was hanging barely by one leg and listing to the side, against the window pane. Now she seems better, so who knows, maybe old age is not going to get her yet.

Thanks; it's a start. I have a feeling that as a digicamera newbie you all will have to humor me for a while, although there aren't too many spiders in the near vicinity to photograph, just now.

It's not much of a glamour shot! :) I was going for "closeness" and wanted to see how much detail of the epigynum I could catch. The head-down orientation is typical.

Portrait of "Sophie II"

Here's a recent shot of the A. diadematus, Sophie II, that has been living in our apartment since August (same spider as in shot above). She's dining on a drumstick. I'm pleased with the shot, but I see that she, too, seems to have a mite problem on her chelicerae. :-(

Her favorite meal is houseflies; she loves the sound of them buzzing and even in her old age comes running as soon as she takes notice of one waiting for her.

Wow! What camera is that?
Panasonic Lumix FZ-7 with Raynox DCR-250 macro converter, onboard-flash with diffuser.

The hardest part about these shots, so far, is getting the lighting right, finding the right angle of approach (the angle from which you shoot determines which areas are simultaneously in focus), getting the focus (handheld), etc.

Fortunately, the digital camera is a great boon to trial-and-error.
