a friend of my sisters has 2 frogs that are in the same tank as her goldfish. they are white (or at least light colored). the only aquatic frogs that i know of are the little african frogs. but she had BIG frogs (body about 4"). and i thought about getting a fishtank and some of those frogs. or at least something my son won't pull out of the cage to pet.

I am not sure what they are called, but I have heard of these. Pretty much just jumbo sized african frogs right?

I really enjoyed mine in the past. I put 2 in one of those large pretzel barrels you get from Smart n Final. Added a wandering jew vine that sprouted roots in the water and grew around the container making a nice look. I even had a basic filter in the back that I hid with a fake rock.

Enjoy

yes, my sisters friend has 2 of them in a tank with 2 big goldfish. sometimes it looked like the frogs were riding on the back of the goldfish. i thought it neet and the kids would enjoy them. my boy likes fish. i want to get a pet, but one that will stay in he cage/tank. the grow a frog kids seem interesting, but when they tadpole turns into a bullfrog my son will run all over the place with the frog.

i think it's a clawed frog, that i need the info on, i'm googleing it right now

The bigger ones are African clawed frogs Xenopus laevis which can get up to 5". The small ones are dwarf African clawed frogs Hymenochirus boettgeri which will only get a little over 2". Here is a web site that should help you out http://clawedfrogs.tripod.com/.

Budgets frogs are neat too. Hope to get one of them at the next reptile show.
Clawed frogs are illegal here in CA :(

what??!! darn it, just figured out the name of the critter and now i can't have it. no ferrets, gerbils or clawed frogs! what else can't i have that i want??

guess i'll just go with the grow a frog kit, maby a pacman frog or bullfrog. maby a gecko. (i do want to get some T's again, but they'll have to wait a while).

I know, CA sucks when it comes to cool pets. You're not supposed to keep the big african clawed frogs (xenopus laevis) but the African dwarf frogs are ok.

Also check out surinam toads (pipa pipa), they're kind of interesting. I think they're legal....

I wouldn't recommend housing them together. For one thing, properly housing goldfish requires something like 20 gallons of water per fish and MASSIVE filtration, like twice what you'd need for a normal tank of whatever size - otherwise fish that are capable of living over thirty years will be slowly poisoned by their own filth and die much sooner. Anything living in the tank with them will also be affected badly.

Clawed frogs and goldfish will also happily eat one another if the sizes are right.

It's weird that they're illegal in CA, I guess people were dumping them in the wild. Clawed frogs are tough and big eaters, I can see where they'd destroy some native wildlife.

EDIT: If you get a pacman frog, just be aware that your kid needs to keep his hands out of the tank, they're big biters - and not very exciting either, they spend most of their time half buried and motionless. :D Also despite what pet stores and the like will tell you, a diet of mostly fish or rodents is terrible for them.

As someone who was a kid not too long ago, I don't think any pet is going to replace the video games and tv in your household - and sitting around staring at fish is not actually any different from sitting around staring at a tv screen. If you want less time spent vegetating, get the kid into books or playing outside, or sports if he's into it (but don't force it if he's not, because that's MISERABLE if you don't enjoy it). :) Art supplies, maybe?

both my kids loved watching the fishtank, the bearded dragons and T's that i had. they weren't happy when i had to get rid of everything when we moved. plus they just recently got into videogames (unlike me {D ).
they'd be watching critters.. if not, i will

x. laevis are dirty critters, too. i maintain the colonies at my university, and even on a circulating systems, they're quite messy. they also prefer their water at 18-20 degrees C, have absolutely no interest in being touched (pretty much a fish), but are quite cool to look at.
