My folks had one when I was a kid. Nice looking cats, and get somewhat large. As far as I could tell, their character wasn't much different than any other cat. Liked to kill things, usually nice, but moodier than a dog.

I heard they are very dog-like but I've only ever seen one!

I assume they're pretty expensive? All the websites I checked out didn't list any prices.
They look great though!!!

I had a Maine Coon cat cross for many years, he was a large cat, very smart, and very friendly to everyone. I have friends who hated cats that loved him. He was beautiful and loving and my best friend. I still miss him........

I had a Maine Coon/Siamese mix for about 13 years. He was a great cat, liked to play catch like a dog, could open door knobs (it took me a while to figure out why my doors would be open when I got home from work {D ), and was much more trainable than any other cat I've ever had. Unfortunately, he also had a terrible problem with FUS and cost me a fortune in vet bills and that is what killed him at about 15.

I have a maine coon mix and she's the sweetest cat ever! As someone said, very doglike in her personality. She greets me at the door, and TALKS constantly. First thing in the morning, we have to have a "conversation" about how her night went. If she has no one to play with, she'll toss her toys across the room and play fetch with herself! I can't attach a picture from school, but I'll put one up when I get home. We adopted her from a rescue last New Year's eve and now she runs the house. OR thinks she does.

What's FUS?

Would anyone here consider a Maine Coon a danger for T tanks and aquariums?

From the descriptions it sounds like it would be an animal I could easily fall in love with. Especially because I've also felt a hankerin' for a Labrador lately - though I'll not be able to get one within a forseeable future.

I want more pictures! I want more stories! I want more everything!!! :D

Feline Urologic Syndrome, I understand that it's kind of like kidney stones or cystitis in people. It is supposed to be common in large male cats, especially if they have been neutered. And boy, was he large at 23 pounds (and not fat) he could be a holy terror if he got riled up about something like the time he decided to take on my boyfriend's Doberman and won{D

I'd consider ANY cat to be a danger for tanks and aquariums. A friend of mine is moving into my apartment and has a cat and she's agreed to build me a locking cabinet that I can put all my critters in (SCORE!).

Man, did I state that wrongly indeed! My question, stated the right way, would be: Does an MC pose more of a threat than a normal, stupid cat :D

More of a threat? Probably not. But there is always a threat with cats and T's that don't have a door between them.
I'll look through my pictures and find one of my Donovan and post it for you, he was a very handsome boy.

I'd say not. My maine coon mix likes to lay on top of the aquarium where my male G. rosea lives. She just watching him and watches him. It's a matter of making sure the habitats aren't where they can be pulled over or knocked off of something. My sling lives on top of the fridge! :)

I have a friend with two maine coons. They are amazing. Very playful, they get huge. The last time I saw them they were still kittens and were much bigger than any other adult cat I had seen. Every thing is a toy, but maybe that's just a typical kitten thing.

T.s and cats

I'm not 100% sure but i think my cat is a maine coon mix. she is pretty good around my T. the only problem was the first night she tried to get at it but i told her no brought the cage down she looked then walked over to the bed and slept. there has been no problem since and they share the same room almost 24/7.

We also had a mix, and she seriously thought she was a dog. She even went hiking into the mountains with us, and followed right along without a leash. One time when dear hubby slipped on a rock and fell into a mountain stream, she ran out to him in the knee deep cold water just to seemingly see if he was okay, and came back to the shore to wait for him to get out of the water. She was also pretty large for a cat, large frame and long silky hair.

She played a lot, super friendly to family and everyone else, mischievous (she once climbed out on a limb of a tree to sit on the roof of the house), and was really good with our other pets. She'd play with cat toys with our cockatiel, who loved the plastic balls with bells in them. She'd sit and groom our guinea pig and showed no interest in harming any of my snakes or rodents. She loved playing with water, she'd sit there and play with the toilet water if we left the lid up, or play with the sink water while you were brushing your teeth, and also loved playing in the snow.

All in all if I could afford another, I'd get one in a heartbeat. We just got lucky with her. I walked into a pet store to get snake food and as I was walking down an aisle a kitten reached out of a cage and grabbed me, and then looked at me like, "Hey, get me outta here!". They had the mother on site and it was clearly a Maine Coon who'd accidentally gotten knocked up by a neighbor's cat.

I'd post a picture, but all my old pictures were wiped on my old hard drive when we got struck by lightning. =(
