I've had my goldfish* for about a year. I've noticed my fish doing this weird thing where it will suddenly stop swimming and let itself sink for a few seconds before it starts swimming again, only to repeat the action again in a few minutes. What's wrong with my fish?

*His/ger companion died about a month or two ago. My currently alive goldfish is a bubble eye goldfish.

Sorry to hear about your fish buddy not behaving as they should! It's always stressful to see a pal not doing well, so I wish you luck!
How old is your current fish and how large would you say he or she is? What temperature do you keep the water?
Common problems that cause swimming issues are trouble with the swim bladder from age or water chemical imbalances, infections or stress (possibly from losing their friend), or temperature fluctuations. I'll try my best to help you out the best I can!

trouble with the swim bladder
I'd rule that out. Most common symptom of that condition is can't tell which way is up. BUT!!! Fish can live with that! As attested by a 28 inch pet rainbow trout who spent most of it's life upside down.

Most common problem in general in fish is stress caused by: 1. Water temp. 2. Dissolved O2. 3 Dissolved N. Ruaway nitrogen is usually the most common problem with fish acting like they can't catch their breath. And the rule is, N goes up, O2 goes down - always.
PS Fish poop = free soluable nitrogen.

Goldfish require a lot of space and filtration.
How big is the fish, the tank and what are the water parameters?

This type of goldfish (and a lot of other fish) do this occasionally. You need to be more elaborate with your description of symptoms.

You also should have posted this in the aquatic forums where dedicated hobbyists can assist you. If you posted this to the forums I'm on, I could refer you to some marine biologists who have experience with fish disease and pathogens.

If you just want basic help, at least post the tank parameters and some photos of the set up so we have an idea of what we are dealing with.

Also include useful information such as your maintenance routine, how often you do water changes, did you add any new plants or animals, how under filtered is your tank, etc.
