hiya mal,

Right now im raising a A. avicularia also, the thing that you have to remember is that this species is a climber so you have to make sure you give him enough height than width in a home. also provide enough climbing branches and leaves (fake ones)so that way they can eventually web a home for their selves.I provide about 3-4 inches potting soil and moss to try to provide their natural habitat...always think of the way they would live and not the way you want them to live....Just my advice to another A. avicularia owner

How big is the sling? The answer to that question will have a bearing on the answer to your question. Many people believe good air circulation to be of a bigger importance than humidity with the Avics. I try to keep the humidity up (for the slings under an inch or so) by keeping the substrate damp, but I don't restrict the air flow. I keep the tiny ones in pill vials with lots of air holes. My spider room has a ceiling fan that is on 24-7 to improve air circulation and a humidifier that keeps the room at 60%. That level seems to keep the cages from drying out too quickly and individual humidities can be varied from cage to cage by the amount of water in the substrate or water dishes.

If your sling is over an inch, IMO you're pretty much out of the woods. It should be smooth sailing and your significant other will be the happy owner of a fat and happy Avic.

I just checked her/him out [unsure its immature cant tell its sex?] Its got about a two inch leg span [from side to side] And about an inch long body. If that helps any on how I should care for her. Also a feeding schedual. We weren't told when it last fed so when would be a safe bet to attempt to feed it? We really appreciate all this help from you all :D I have an adult female rose haired too But this is a diff species and I'm not sure Im doing to good with the rosie [gulps]:( It hasnt eaten in a few months but did recently molt..about 6-7 days.. if you want I can take pix of both our darling spiders :) there soo cute and fuzzy... more on the fuzzy side. I read the info on the rosie's spiders on the forum I hope my new knowledge helps improve her health if she isnt doing so well:confused:

At two inches you can put a small water dish in her enclosure and not worry too much about humidity. Make sure you've got good ventilation and she'll be fine. As for feeding, feed at your leisure. As long as the abdomen looks healthy, she'll be fine. I feed my Avics about once a week, sometimes twice. There is some debate about overfeeding. Basically it seems to boil down to personal preference. If you like them hefty, feed her more. If not, don't. If she doesn't want to eat, she won't. If she refuses food, take it out the next day. For the most part they are pretty forgiving and easy to care for.

As for your rose hair, I wouldn't be kicking yourself over her eating habits. Sometimes rosies do that. As long as her abdomen isn't shrinking too much, she should be fine. There are some threads with really good rose hair info in the T forum. There is also a "sticky" at the top of this forum with a lot of good info on rose hairs.

Good luck.

IME, yes. I have nothing but fake plants in all of my arboreal enclosures. That includes Avics and Pokies.

Avicularia avicularia

At the 2" stage it should have it's adult colours (ie green/blue body and pink toes)
Unfortunately they lose the red abdominal chevrons, which fade out to two red streaks as the spider gets larger. IMO Avicularia avicularia looks it's absolute best atween 1.5 and 2.5"
When very small, Avicularia are prone to dessication (drying out) but yours is past that stage. Keep it with a thin layer of peat and a small water bowl. You don't want the tank to get all "sweaty"

Grammostola rosea

Do not worry about it not feeding. My 10yr old female recently fasted for over 8 months. As long as she has a water dish she will be fine.
