Are there any photos from the mid 1800s when there was an estimated 60 million bison herd? That must have been an amazing sight!

Well, photography was very new back then and as far as I know, everything had to be stationary for the time of taking photo (a few minutes) and I very much doubt anyone could have taken it. Drawings are much more probable

You could contact the Ansel Adams Gallery, www.anseladams.com. They have an extensive library of many of the photographers and their works probably dating back through that period.

Vaguely recalling from a Yellowstone trip that the bison in the park are the descendants of those hunted willy-nilly by "men" in bowler hats and well coiffed mustaches. I think that is one of the only locations left where they are genetically similar to the hordes that once lit up the plains. Here's a disquieting photo:

Thats the only photo I could find too. Yeah, they cross bred with cattle.

There are a couple private herds here in oklahoma that are still pretty close to being pure genetically speaking...i know of at least 1 small rancher that claims his are not crossbred....they are very beautiful animals nonetheless...
