OK, I found a female spider in my basement, about 7/8", a few months back and of course put her in a cup and have been feeding her - she is a vicious little thing. She made a wierd web, messy looking with a big gob in the center that connects to the substrate. The web attaches all the way around the circle of the cup she is in. She usually is under it. I can't get a good pic of her so I found the a close match on the web and altered it to look like her. A male version of her found his way to her cup last week, so I let him in, he plucked her web and they co-habitated for a few days and then he was toast. She is very velvty looking, a dark, almost black chocolate brown with very pointy legs.Just wondering if I have something dangerous since she may be a momma soon :)

Looks like a Pseudophoneutria photoshopiensis :)

EDIT: Hmm probably a Tegenaria sp.
I dont know if the hobospider is found where you live -. if so the bite can be serious. Take a look at this site:
www.hobospider.org
Other Tegenaria are harmless.

Thanks for the info but she doesn't seem to fit the hobo spider pic - she isn't hairy as in wild hairs, hers are very short and tight, thus the velvety look. In shape she is just like a brown recluse except her legs aren't as long and she is almost black.

Anyway, if its not a hobo (or other Tegenaria ssp.) you dont have a dangerous spider there. Recuse dont web and its not a wandering spider (dont web).
Perhaps Agelenopsis sp.
Try to take a picture of it.

Believe me, I'd love to get a pic of her, but she is very fast and very aggressive for such a small spider. Since she hides under her web most of the time I've had to try to prod her out to get a pick and just about lost her a couple of times. There really is a big difference in stamina when you've got the more "advanced" lung system LOL. You would think that she would be more appreciative since when I found her she was starving and dehydrated and now she gets nice juicy meals of roach, cricket and what not every other day ;) However, I will endeaver to continue to try to get a shot of her each time I break out the camera and will post if I get lucky enough to get one.

But that isn't the spider Gail has, it's a different one she altered to look like the one she has.

I missed that the first time as well, I had to go back and read it again to figure out what Lelle was talking about!

OK, that was quick. I just checked her and she has an egg sack. I speculated that with a sack, she might not be so willing and ready to run and I could get a pic or two. These aren't very good, you can barely see the marks on the top her abdomen which only show in the right light. Hopefully, the shape of the egg sack and web will help identifiy her. This first one is of her web.

These next two are of her and the sack. I had to pull some of the web open to get the shots and she stuck to that sack like it was gold and she was a leprechaun.

Now, since she is only about 7/8" when fully stretched out, I suspect these are going to be extremely small babies. What do I feed them? John, you raise all those tiny widows, how do you do it?

Have you compared her to any pictures you can find
of "violin spiders", or brown recluse spiders?
Its a real interesting spider. I know brown recluse
can be a darker clolor. Are the males and female
brown recluse a different shape? I didn't think
they made any webs though. Being in the TX area
you probably have spiders that are found mostly
in the deep South of the US.
