My westie would hunt down my parakeet?

It was like something out of the matrix.. the little guy can barely jump on the bed but he grabbed the bird out of the air, no warning barks no growling, just grabbed him and started eating..

By "Westie", I assume you mean a West Highland White Terrier. You HAVE read up on the history of this breed, right? They were bred hunt down and KILL rats, foxes, weasels-pretty much any animal smaller than they are. Most terrier breeds have an extremely high prey drive, as much so as any cat. The fact that they are now mostly pets hasn't dampened that killer instinct.

actually I don't know much about dogs because I don't like them. His previous owner died, and he was given to a friend of my moms, who only knew that he was a show dog. Well, he was really shell shocked and wouldn't respond to anyone until he met me and decided I was his new owner. So, now I have a dog with lotsa vet bills because hes allergic to like.. EVERYTHING but beef and peanut butter (even rx diet):? :? :? but atleast he doesn't do annoying dog things like beg for food, jump on furniture/laps with out permission and pee on stuff in the house.

Unfortunately, he wont follow a command that ANYONE else gives him.

I don't mind keeping him now, because he grew on me.. but Im PISSED about the bird.

Can I expect to see behavior like this with my other pets? He seems to be friends with the iguana, (which i dont really trust) but I mean.. if he can get enough air to grab a bird, what else can I expect from him?
