Wait until the flights then get a queen and place her in a test tube setup then wait a month or so for workers.

None of those species- "Army ants or other cool species" are available in the USA...they may be illegal as considered "crop pests"...

As bhoeschcod said, your best bet is to keep your eyes peeled this time of year. Look for "flying ants", especially large sized ones. There is a good chance it's a female queen-to-be on her nuptial flight. Catch her, put her in a test tube or someone kind of container with some soil. You'll see she'll drop her wings in a day or two and also dig around in the soil, followed by egg laying. Then it's just a waiting game. WHen the eggs hatch and you have those new workers, you can move them into an ant farm of some sort.
My advise is to never buy ants online. They only send you worker ants that will die in a few weeks.
Also, look into culturing termites. If you find enough of them, usually 50 to 100, they will pick a worker to become a queen and you'll be able to establish a colony. Just as cool as ants in my opinion. :)

I agree that the best way to get your ants is to find those that have flown on their mating flights. You will not however find Army Ants as the queens do not fly and and mature colonies that are collected always die.
