Yea I've thought about using many species in the Antfarm brand of ant terr. I've got a smallish Trapdoor spider I think would be good to put in one. I'm tired of not seeing it. I'd think it would work. I've seen several ant sp here in Tx that I think would be interesting to put in an Antfarm.
Um... Thats not how it works.
Male and Female ants (winged) are released into the air. Males mate with the females. Females drop their wings and start new colonies, males die. Look for winged ants, without their wings. They will have boxy thoraxes with visible wing scars. This is a queen ant, and she will raise a new colony on her own. Also, ants fly all the time. Depending on species. Some fly on warm winter days, others in the heat of summer, really just depends.
If youre talking about driver ants... good luck I hope you have a good 100 acre area at least! even then you wouldnt get to look at the colony as much as im sure you would like too.
that ant store wont ship to the US you have to make youre own set ups, using terriums, or making plaster set ups. like I have done
keeping ants is great and there very facinating to watch doing there thing.if u go with one of the store bought farms make sure u keep the soil moist as these tend to dry out very quickly.finding queens can be ez at times others a serious task.flip over tons of rocks and logs and u will be bound to find a colony.the queen is usually the first one to hide so be quick
I usually spend the summer getting rid of ants in my bug room, but this summer I'm going to build a nice big ant farm. Will post some pics when I do. I wish the store bought ones were better (for the ants). The gel ones are cool but not very functional.
