oh, bummer, I still have a disproportionate number of males...
this time it's the P ornata.
I have a crummy macro, but here's a pic. I suspected it some time ago, but confirmed today with the exuvia.
That's 3 out of 4 pokies confirmed male, and the jury is still out on the P regalis, but I'm leaning towards female (fingers tightly crossed)

I've got the same problem... It seems they make up 3.5 : 5 of all the slings I get. Oh well, my collection will be dramatically cleaned out before too long and I can start all over again. Maybe by then I'll get lucky and get some little females to raise :)

I welcome males in my collection, and not just for breeding. I've taken up the habit of buying at least 2 and usually 3 of any species I want a female of. My collection is at least 40% larger than the size it would be if this wasn't necessary. Since I just crossed the 60 mark with the order I'm getting today, I could use some maling-out over the next 12 months.

I think the rule of thumb is if you only have one and it was a spider you were only mildly interested in, it will be female. If it's a species you really want to establish in the collection, it will be a male. Or at least that's how it seems to work :)

I agree with CM.
It took me 5 Acanthoscurria geniculata's before I finally scored a female. It also took 3 Grammastola pulchra's before I finally broke down and purchased a confirmed female.

that is so true!
I did the same thing, bought an adult female G pulchra.
Looks like I'll have to invest the same in the pokies that I want.
The good news is I'll have breeding loans all over the place, and I'm bound to get slings sometime......aren't I?!
(although every male I've sent out....no luck yet)

I'll bet my rule of thumb works for breeding loans as well. If you send out a male of a species you're only marginally interested in, you'll get back 2000 slings. Send out one you're mad about and nothing ;P

that's right Code! I shall endeavor from now on to not give a rats patoot about the males I send out :)
I'll let you know if I can influence the percentages!
