Hi All,
The Green or Carolina Anole, Anolis carolinensis, has introduced generations of herp enthusiasts to reptile-keeping. Small, active, and willing to breed in captivity, this handsome arboreal lizard makes a wonderful pet. Although associated with “beginners”, Green Anoles are complex creatures, well able to hold the interest of lifelong herpetologists and pet keepers, myself included. A huge array of relatives (there are over 370 anole species!), many available in the pet trade, can be kept in a similar manner. Today I’ll review supplies for Anoles and similar lizards to get you started off right. Please see the linked articles, and post questions below, for detailed information on care and breeding. I always had trouble giving the peach and honey mixture, it would drip all over and they rarely found it to eat, if anything it attracted the flightless fruit flies so the anoles ate them easier. I wonder what was the best way to give them this as they are skittish and don't eat out of your hand.

Hi Keith,

It seems there are individual preferences...field research with other species shows that some take various sap, nectar, others do not; may have to do with nutrient levels in base diet. varying type of fruit may help.

I wire a small cup onto a branch for shyer anoles and day geckos.

Enjoy, best, Frank

Sorry for the delay, Eddie. After retiring from the Bronx Zoo, I was the consultant for the demolition rebuilding of the reptile house...hated to see the old, large exhibts go, especially as I stalked the halls when Carl Kauffeld reigned there, but it was in bigger hands than mine. Set up most of the new exhibits, etc.I was also reptile keeper there many years ago.

Have not been there in a year or so, but reptile house was well-run then, returned to a focus on rattlesnakes. Some very good people there. Not many inverts...another small area in Tropical wing has soem tarantulas, but perhaps that has changed now.; there were some plans to expand invert exhibits. best, Frank

Hi Eddie, Let me know what you think about the reptile house when you go. Cincinnati Zoo has the best US insect house that I know of; not many spiders. keep an eye out for the live spider exhibit at ther Am Museum of nat History; not many tarantulas, but some interesting native spiders. Live frogs there for next few months, perhaps after that but schedule varies. I was blown away by invert exhibits in japan... more insect oriented than spiders, but amazing if you are interested and have a chance. Great aquariums as well.

best, frank
