Andean milk snake must have been hungry...

I feed my Andean milk snake every 1-2 weeks, providing it with one thawed mouse in a separate feeding container. He has a strong feeding response, but today took things to a new level. He just couldn't wait for the mouse:

When it became apparent that his own movements were triggering a stronger predatory response (not to mention this species is ophiophagous) and that it was attempting to swallow its own tail I decided it was time to intervene. I'm happy to report he eventually let go and suffered no injuries from this bizarre incident.

Has this ever happened to anybody else?

Shrike, Interesting! Yeah, it seems they'd be a little rarer out in the field if wild ones were prone to this type of behavior..... Lol. Glad you intervened and the snake is fine. Nice animal, btw! I've never seen them in person but gather they're among the largest of all L triangulum

Talk about chow-hound kings/milks, my little "Juarez" locale L z agalma eats f/t pinks from my hand like popcorn. I imagine it would definitely overeat if I let it, being in a virtual state of hunger at all times like it is! I'm getting another camera soon- so hopefully I'll have the time after that to take and share some photos of it, too!

Cheers,

Terry

Thanks! Mine certainly isn't a world beater, but they can get very large. I highly recommend this sub species if you get the chance to pick one up.
