Took a pic of this a couple of days ago along with what looked like some kind of beetle larvae and a cicada. I also found a very bright orange assassin but it flew away before I could get my camera ready. It was almost completely orange, just a little black here and there.

That could be, afterall; cicada nymphs do go through several molts before they become the large emerging nymphs we see. So mabye when they are at the earlier nymph stages they look like that? I mainly noticed it's body is longer, and it's eyes are a much larger size than final stage nymphs, I dont know why since underground I dont see why they depend on light?

The beetle larva looks like a Phengodidae, in shape at least, but the markings don't match up with Phengodes laticollis based on the pictures I've seen of it. That species is actually a millipede predator, and pretty interesting. I'm no expert though, that ID could be totally wrong. The assassin is also awesome looking.

Edit: based on the following pictures I'm now 100% sure on the larva, no species listed, but it's definitely Phengodidae.

Thanks for digging up that info Copper. I had been wondering what these where for years. I don't come across them a whole lot. I let that one go on that hunt but a couple of days later, there was one on my wall in my house. Not as big though. I still have it. The one I found outside was wrapped around a bunch of millipede parts so that explains that:) .

edt: Did a little more reading so, based on what I read, the pic is most likely of an adult female. The females are larviform. Males are winged and more noticeably beetle like.....well that's new to me!
