Article: How Toads & Frogs learn to avoid bees & bee mimics. Has anyone observed similar learning abilities (feel free to brag!) http://bitly.com/Pzqhzu
Going by observations of an amphibian commonly known as (former) girlfriendus, I'd say it isn't just likely but an established fact. She was actually able to mimic the speech patterns of homo sapien at times, as well as walking on her hinds legs. Walking while undertaking other complex actions like chewing gum was beyond her capability though. ::
Yeah I've seen them learn what to eat and not eat. I've seen them spit out vinegarones never to try again, closing their eyes to push it out, along with their front legs to wipe their tongue and get it out. But if the vinegarone is really small, they may hold it down. The hungry ones that get sprayed stare at the vinegarone for a few seconds as if trying to decide to go for it, then they look away, it's kind of funny.
The Southern Toad example was recorded in the book mentioned in my article (Animal Behavior); a series of photos; I;m not sure if the author, Tinbergen, referenced a paper or if it was his own work; likely is own, given his backround but I can check. The green frog note is my own observation. Best, Frank

Ha..I've never seen anything done with vinagaroons, thanks. I've seen green frogs swallow sweat bees, which sting but not as viciously as honey or bumblebees, which they avoid. Have seen the staring you describe with stink bugs, very amusing. Saw footage of African Bullfrogs swallowing large centipedes, scorpions, being stung and bitten numerous times...don;t know how they do it!
