peat/sphagnum peat moss are usually less that half the price.
Get coco coir in a garden store instead of a "pet brand" and you save a lot too.

I use straight peat moss with non-burrowing terrestrials and ~70/30 peat/vermiculite for burrowing terrestrials.

Eco-earth alternatives

The bricks are the same as Eco earth. You just have to add water and mix. Ive' found 40# bags of pestifide free potting soil for $2.99 in the buffalo area. You do have to hunt around, though, because most potting soil contains Miracle Gro or other pesticides. you probably have to look beyond the Walmarts, Home Depot's, Lowe's, etc. and go to feed stores.

Plantation soil is awesome. It comes in brick form online $5 for a 3 pack which will fill a 55 gallon at least 4 inches. I mix it with compressed forest moss by the same company. I have high humidity tanks and never any mold. My plants grow like crazy. Only downfall is that it stinks if left soggy

I use a brand of topsoil called EarthGro. It's all-nautral, etc. 40lbs for $1.29.

I use exo terra forest plantation soil, which is coconut husk. It's actuallt the cheapest alternative I've found in Oslo.. All other things are packed full og pesticides and all sorts of nastyness.. But I only have 6 T's, 5 of which are arboreals.. So, I still have most of the block I bought last winter left..
