Adult male tarantula behaviour

Sorry folks this post is just a little observation I've made and I was wondering if anyone shared similar experiences with their adult males.

I bought an adult male G.rosea back at the end of December and have been very happy with him bar one problem. He has a little foot missing on one of his legs and whenever this scrapes against the side of the tank it makes a very loud squeeking noise. This becomes a bit of a pain in the bahooky at night when one is trying to sleep as he is very active when the lights go out.

On Tuesday however I'd just tidied my room and was thinking about how good my room would be to let a hamster run around in (I used to keep hamsters and let them wander around a room on their own). It then occured to me that if the room was safe for a hamster to wander around then surely it would be OK for a male tarantula as well. There isn't really anything he can climb aside from the bed so I figured it would be easy to keep an eye on that.

So I took the boy out, dimed the light slighlty and let him wander around the room for a good half hour. While he was doing that I noticed he stopped and drummed every 5mins or so and was plodding along quite the thing. Didn't look like he was stressed out at all (he stopped to have a groom at one point).

That night he didn't seem so agitated when he was put back in his cage and indeed it was the first time I've ever seen him use his hide and stay there for a while.

So if this a good idea? Or is there something I don't know about that could be stressing little "Duffy".

Opinions welcome

Interesting experiment. I have noticed that my males, once they have charged their palps, wander endlessly back and forth in their enclosures until I breed them. Perhaps your male is getting the chance to burn off a little hormonal energy!

I give my mature males 'walks' up and down the hallway LOL
Some of them just want to come out and walk around. The hallway is a safe place for them to roam with all the doors shut. Both my L parahybana and G aureostriata (loaner) male seemed to actually enjoy (I know that's the wrong word) it. There was no stress or flicking behaviour any of the times I let them roam free.
Elizabeth Mule's mom had a mature male Aphonopelma that they put in a hamster ball, and he'd roll himself all over the house :)

I don't see a huge problem with it as long as everything is safe. I'd also make sure that there is nothing on the carpet that could hurt the T (air freshener, etc.).

Oh what a visual!! But hey, I guess that's probably a very safe way to exercise your male T!!

THe idea of a T rolling around in a hamster ball is very cute hehe though I never liked those balls. I remember having one and trying it out, my hamster pee'd while it was in there. He came out all damn and smelling of pee!

I may have to let my Nhandu chromatus out?! He isn't exactly sociable, but he matured in late December, and he can't get a date. He works sooooooo hard on sperm web after sperm web! I feel bad for him, but if I let HIM out...I may never get him back in! Shall I try the hamster ball thing?

I used to put my short tail pygmy opossum in a large hamster ball. I stopped because he would start it going and then spin himself trying to stop. Do u think that a T could get a ball going enough to have problems stopping?
BTW, I understand the pee thing!! My opussum peed and pooped in it one day. It was intereting bathing him.... ;)

No, no, MizM! First of all, I can afford a hamster ball! Have you seen the price of an adult female N. chromatus? It's a few hundred as far as I can tell!

Also, part of the reason I can't get a date for him is what appears to be an N. chromatus glut on the way. At perhaps 1,000 slings per eggsac, and a potential glut, I don't think I could handle 500 more. I think I am learning that it is possible to have Ts that you can't sell to dealers or anyone. I certainly wouldn't want to just kill them...

At this point, the best thing that could happen is a sexy date with no resulting eggsac!

Or maybe better yet, a hamster ball and a rubber doll?

But, like John noted, that would be an exercise for me to get him into the hamster ball!!!

I could probably make something out of sandwich baggies, uninflated balloons and pipe cleaner stems, for all his eyesight is worth, but what to do about the pheromones (if any) and the drumming?!
