Here are some pics of my yellow ackie...
He's very camera shy so these are the best he was willing to do.

How are the dwarf monintors. I read a little article last month in Reptiles, but that's really about it. Are they as chompy as their larger cousins?

Chompy as in bitey?
No way.. atleast not this guy...
never once shown any aggression at all. A bit pricey, but by far the coolest monitor there is IMO. Plus housing is quite easy.

Bout to trade him for various T's tho...

Or put another way: no. At least not compared to what they were a few years ago. I can remember $1200 ackies, so $200 is a steal by comparison. Yes, more expensive than a beardie, but not that expensive in the grand scheme of reptilian things.

Sounds like a bit of a steal on the hatchling... thought I saw a breeding pair of ackies once not long ago (few months?) and they were $2400!!! CAD.
Anything that costs more than like... well 200 bucks is like nice cars, I'll never own one :?

Price of ackies, red and yellow, have gone down over the years. I bought my juvenile red ackie for $200. Yes ackies are more expensive then many other monitors but thats the initial price. In the long run you will save hundreds by purchasing a dwarf monitor.

I have a Timor and an Ackie. Their main diet is insects. Theres an ocational pinky or small lizard but compare this to a larger monitor. They will require a MUCH larger enclosure, more stuff for the large enclosure, and the most expensive thing about larger species is their diet. Compare a whole bunch of crickets to a whole bunch of mice.

I prefer small monitors too, but If you have space to keep a big monitor you have space enough to breed mouse, and it is easier to breed them than crickets (at least for me ;) ). So in this way mouse is cheaper than crickets. :)

Eper-ani is right...dwarf monitors may cost more, but they are much more affordable to maintain in the long run. As a general rule, the cheaper a monitor is, the more expensive it will be as it grows, and vice versa. It's a lot easier to house a 2-3 foot monitor than it is to house a 6 footer.
