My girlfriend has agreed I can get a T as she's not keen on them (I hope to change that) but she doesn't mind as long as I don't expect her to feed, maintain or handle (I don't plan to handle myself just maintain and feed etc)

She will only agree to me having one species. Which one would you go for and why. These are the choices I've narrowed it down to so I mean out of the above species...

Thanks 😁😁

Also, a sidenote: I plan on keeping in an Exo Terra plastic Large faunarium as looking to acquire a female so it won't be a sling and all but the T Vagans are really fast growers. I plan on rehousing to a similar sized but better looking enclosure maybe in the future. What's your views on that, too. Whatever species I get I hope to get as young as I can but old enough to determine the sex of the Tarantula

you might want to discuss the types of feeders you will need to bring into the house as well my gf was not happy at all when she found out i wanted to use roaches:rofl: as feeders along with the super worms and crickets

I'm thinking with Phormictopus less chance of hairs as I'm not too bothered about threat postures or attempted bites etc, hopefully getting haired won't be too much of a problem although I'm leaning towards the A Genic just because it's Big (Around the same size as that Phormictopus species) and it feeds as good, it's out more... There's much worse looking Ts, plus the hardiness is what is drawing me to it with me being a beginner. Nhandu Tripepii probably even more likely to kick hairs than a Genic and be a little more flighty. T Vagans is beautiful, the only issue with T Vagans for me is size and although out a fair bit I've read they have more of a tendency to burrow or hide than A Geniculata. Gotta be A Geniculata so far. I should have made this a poll to assist these great answers.

Cheers 😁😁

Made it into a poll guys and added a other species to the mix if yous would kindly answer the poll

Thankyou 😁😁

She's aware of the crickets. Other things I might have to break to her gently haha. Can you get what you need weekly or whatever and just keep them to feed as and when?

All are good choices , depending what color you want.

What exactly are you looking for in a tarantula? Size? Coloration? Temperament?
Yeah I want at least fair size. 6" minimum fully grown and Feisty is good but temperament in itself isn't too bad as long as they have a great feeding response and are good eaters. Would prefer fast growth rates in comparison with most Brachys and grammostola, or Aphonopelma for example.

Colouration isn't always the deal-breaker because some of them can be subtly beautiful but does help in some cases, A Genic isn't full of bright colours other than black or brown and white but has its own subtle beauty whereas Phormictopus Sp purple ha she edge in colour but not necessarily in beauty I'd say they're more or less equal. Psalmopeus Cambridgei have that subtle beauty in spades but a bit much for my first T haha I need to get used to the terrestrials first.

That's what it makes it hard to choose they all have their own form of beauty. Personality is important too, or should I say temperament as not to Anthropomorphise lol

From what I can gather A Genic and Phormictopus Sp are pretty equal in temperament but in slightly different ways. But they seem to have the bolder temperaments

Is there no issues nutritionally with feeding just superworms or meal worms rather than adding crickets, locusts or roaches?

The fact they don't have legs will probably be less worrying for my gf although she hasn't said anything but I can always treat them to a cricket or two when she's not in the house so I don't worry her but I don't think she has an issue as long as I don't let them escape and breed in the house lol

I currently "only" have 5 T's -- one still a sling (if just barely), two juveniles, and two adults. I had just one for about two months before I got my second. Didn't get my third until 6 months after that... So I've been feeding small numbers of T's for a while.

I feed them mostly crickets. At some point, some lesser mealworms hitchhiked in on my big-box-pet-store crickets and took over a feeder bin, so the sling gets mini mealworms sometimes.

Can you get what you need weekly or whatever and just keep them to feed as and when?
With just one T, this is pretty much what I did. Still what I do with 5. Honestly with something bigger than a sling, you'll be feeding it at most once every week or two, and you could pretty easily pick up just the cricket or two you need. My local place has a big bin of crickets and they count out however many (or few) you ask for. I have not had any problems with cricket smells or chirping when I've only got like half a dozen at most sitting around.

I need to get used to the terrestrials first.
I started with arboreals, but to be fair, I didn't get a psalmo until I'd successfully rehoused my Avic and my versi a couple times (my two irminias were in the third wave). They are a very noticeable notch faster, and the female I bought was at least an inch bigger than advertised. 😱

Is there no issues nutritionally with feeding just superworms or meal worms rather than adding crickets, locusts or roaches?
Nope... Tarantulas don't need variety in their diet as long as the feeders you use have sufficient nutrition for them. I believe mealworms and superworms are fine. I and plenty of others on here also have 100% cricket-fed T's that are fine.

Your problem is you need a new gf. Only one T, or one species? There’s a way to get more than one T that are all the same species according to science.

Get what you want, only one life to live. That’s a bunch crap

Tell her GF 2.0 is moving in due to her mandates
