I got my new corn a little while ago and it is doing great, but i am wondering why it decides to spend its time on the cooler end of the tank when it has a nice 85 degree coconut shell to curl up in. It goes in there after it eats for about a day but then it curls up under the substrate on the cooler end. When i first got it, it was very very warm and it was hanging out against the glass so i guess it was really hot in there. The cool end is about 70-75 degrees. Is it normal to hang out in the cold area?

weird corn

Actually my corn does the exact same thing! He has a hide on both ends of the tank, but after he eats he tunnels under the substrate on the cool end:confused: . Anyway, i guess this makes your corn not so weird,...or maybe it just makes mine and your corn weird.....

My corn did the same thing. I eventually gave up on using heat and kept him at room temp. Have you tried getting a lamp dimmer at a hardware store and adjusting the warm temps down a bit?

Go to Walmart or a similar store and get yourself a digital thermometer, the kind with a probe so it can measure indoor and outdoor temps. You can usually find one for around $14.00. Put the probe inside the warm hide and find out what the temp is in there. It is possible it is warmer than 80ish inside the hide, and that could be why your snake is avoiding it. If the temps are acceptable inside the hide, then don't worry about it, your snake should be able to thermoregulate as he needs to.

I noticed that my King does not like the coconut shell I offered him. When I had a half log on the cold side, and a coconut shell on the warm side, I frequently find him under the half log despite the warmth and the relatively colder room temperature. After switching the half log over to the warm side and the coconut to the cold side, I find him on the warm side all the time.

picky corn

This is another possibility.I didnt mention that my corn wont use any hide except for half logs.I've tried rock hides, homemade hides, coconut hides, etc. He always either uses the half log,or burrows.

This is normal. Corns use the heat to digest. They bask in the sun to get heat after a meal, but don't need heat all the time. Too hot and they would be constantly metabolizing and needing food, you would have to feed them more often. Their natural range is FL to NJ and NJ is cold! There's a great cornsnake forum simply www.cornsnakes.com.

BTW, you should have a hide on both ends, and something like a branch to climb on.
