Hello

I had a question about heating aboreal T enclosures, which is better A). side mounted heat strip. B) undertank mounted or C) dome ceramic heater, placed high enough as not to cook the T.

Thanks

William

Since it summer you shouldn't have to heat them unless u have a AC going .

Heat bad...

From what I have heard heating is pointless, and very risky/possably detremental to your T's health. EX:Heat = Bad. The temp in your house should be good enough....

room temp

I live in NoCA, also live in a ground floor apt, my room doesnt usually get above 70 deg, which is nice on warm days., right now the temp gauge in the tank reads 69 deg. Should the ambient temp for A. avic, be at least 75-80 deg?

Thanks

From what I’ve read, most T’s do well in the mid to high 70’s temp range. I keep my T’s in my basement which gets rather cold and bone dry during the Chicago winter season so I use a “double boiler” enclosure arrangement to keep them warm. All of my enclosures from the pill vials to the large critter keepers are kept together in a much larger clear plastic lidded storage bin (about 2’x2’x3’). This outer container is then wrapped with an old electric blanket. I’ve adjusted the control unit until it’s keeps the interior temp around 78 degrees. The heat is mild and indirect which reduces any danger of overheating. I also keep a bowl of water in the bin which keeps the humidity up. Hopefully I can continue temper my collecting avarice and avoid having to upgrade to stacked foot lockers <grin>.

if youre really worried about it, maybe try an incandescent light....a red one, 60W... placed strategically...

Personally, i don't see a need for anything you were talking about, although we each have our own ways of heating....

There's no reason to go crazy if youre a couple degrees below or above for a little bit. Not that you're going crazy, but you know what i mean...

I've raised Ts fine for years and i've never once used a humidity gauge.. i dont have any hanging thermo strips or anything...

as long as you keep them within range, all will be ok.
In fact, a couple months during the year i keep them cooler. I know some people do the same thing..although i live in minnesota, which makes even chicago look like a warm tropical beach in summer ;)

the point:
i don't think there's any reason to worry over a couple of degrees.. i mean, even in the wild, the temps are ranging.. and in captivity the temps are ranging too. Read: within reason of course :)

but then again, thats just me and the way I raise my Ts... i suppose we all have our own little ways.

good luck man!
peace
dave

p.s: windy - nice little set up you got there!

All of my arboreals are at room temp. The temp does fluctuate at times, but I don't worry about it.

During the winter, I have the heater on to warm up the house, but nothing to warm up the T's especially.

During the summer, I turn on the AC at times, but the T's seem to do fine when the air temp is comfortable.
