I found this on a rock in my backyard. I thought it was part of the rock. But the wasp didn't do THAT good a job. I noticed something a little different about that spot on the rock. I've probably seen a bunch of these around here but just didn't know it. Pretty good camo job. Anybody know the ID? Going to put it in a container with hopes of seeing an adult and maybe I will post that later. That's what I'm assuming anyway.....a wasp(?). Looks like it's made from small rocks and tree resin.

Some kind of potter wasp or mud dauber maybe? I didn't know they used rocks, though?

Pretty sure that is a chunk of sap that a tree used to close a wound and fell off. The rocks are bits of tree bark and crystallized resin. The opening shown in the second picture is where it was attached to the tree.

Do you have any pine trees or any others that release sap in your yard?

I could be totally wrong though. If you don't have any pine trees, this is a really cool find!!!
