If you are shipping USPS here is something you all should know
I had a box going out today and it was refused. The reason being is they do not ship spiders at ALL

Page 951
section 8.5 line b. [states and this is a direct written quote]
all poisenous animals except scorpions mailed for medical purposes or for the manufacture of antivenom; all poisenous insects; all poisenous reptiles; and all types of snakes, turtles, and spiders.

this is out of the domestic mail manual updated 7-15-07
I am a totally honest person and I tell them everytime I ship live 'harmless' inverts. Been doing it for years. What shall I do next time ...lie out my teeth:embarrassed: not gonna happen. So now I use fed-ex or ups.
this one time the person behind the counter decided to look it up after I had left the post office . Two hours later I get the call to come and get my package. I received a refund and walked out rather pissed off with the grinning mail person behind the counter feeling like she won a big prize.

Really? I hate UPS and Fed-Ex simply because I am never home. It's much easier for me to pick up spiders from the Post Office because they're waiting for me. I even told the last postal worker I dealt with that my package contained tarantulas and she just asked me how they got air inside all the packaging. No questions over legality at all. And do the shippers normally have to tell the postal workers what's inside the box? Last time I shipped something, there were no questions asked. They just took it from me.

I just print out a sticker at home and say I need a pick up on usps website. I hand them the package at my door and say thanks. Never ask me whats in it. p.s None of my inverts are poisonous and if they were I wouldn't eat them ;)

That is all up to you ...they got me for some time and gas ....
Legally...we are not supposed to according to the book she pulled out.
I have a feeling when the x-ray scanners come out we ALL will have to find another venue

Probably not even a problem then....unless your tarantula looks a lot like a handgun or stick of dynamite.

I never tell them what it is unless they ask, when they ask I say "collectables". One time I received a package from someone and it was marked, "keep away from extreme heat and cold" PC parts inside.

according to that, you CAN ship tarantulas. There not a thing in there stating you can not ship Tarantulas, or scorpions or even rattlesnakes. It plainly says poisonous , not venomous. Tarantulas are not poisonous in the least.

It doesn't say all poisonous spiders, it says all types of snakes, turtles and spiders, which I interpret to mean no spiders can be shipped whether poisonous or not. Does it say in the manual what the penalties are?

You don't have to lie... you don't have to tell anyone what your shipping. There's no reason to. They can't ask you what's in the box. They can ask you a certain question... something like "is there anything persishable/dangerous/breakable" or something like that.

I don't even give my box to a person. I print my labels online and drop them in a box at the PO. So there's no one to ask me anything... the question gets asked online.

It has been like that for a long time. I never tell them whats in the box.
One time I shipped a box ofh 15 scorps in it. Some how it got damaged in Indiana and the deli cups full of scorps fell out. They called me and told me I had to come them. The deli's were taped so they would'nt open. After I talked to 6 different people at the post office. I finally found someone willing to put them back in the box and tape it up and ship it back to me. lol

I find it's best to print my own postage online. Then you can just drop it off at a different post office. they don't have to ask you any questions at all.

Yep. Took the words right out of my mouth. Neither are they true "spiders."

I love the PC heat/cold statement.

Lookit folks..it said spiders...and what are tarantulas...yup spiders...tarantulas are in fact big hairy prehistoric spiders one definable type of spider..it is as simple as that.
I posted this for all you folks to be on the aware...not to give a bunch of written tips on how to get around what is written so everybody can see......the way I look at it now is maybe I should have posted nothing on the subject...this has started a thread that some idiot government official or fish and game <person> can see and make some damn hidden ajenda.
We should not have printed or posted ways around the rules:wall: :wall:
maybe sent in a pm to each other.....
Any how that was my first experience with this type of assinity from the post office...that was the date on the book, I am sure not when the rule was made

This is nothing new. It's been that way for a long time, not just since 2007... as WyvernsLair mentioned earlier. There's been plenty of other discussions on it.

CLICK HERE for a ruling from 1980.

"3. It follows that tarantulas are nonmailable material under 18 U.S.C. § 1716(a) and Domestic Mail Manual Section 124.211. "

the way I look at it now is maybe I should have posted nothing on the subject...
If you want it deleted just let me know, and it's gone. Please watch your language though.

Also, don't expect to just walk in to Fedex and UPS and not have an issue either, if you're fully disclosing what you're shipping. Fedex will do it, but under certain constraints (licensed company or something?)

Eric

with all due respect john apple, your post is nothing new along with anything that came after it. Let's not get caught up in government conspiracy theories.

GoTerps is on the money with this one.
