I am in a doubt with my girfriend. We want to buy a tarantula sling for a new year but we cannot chose between Purpurea and Diversipes. Can you point out the differences between them (max size, behaviour...) they have the same price.

Purpurea is one of the smaller Avics, and one of, if not the slowest growers. Its also easily the least sensitive to conditions, and a poor first avic....IMO its the poorest choice for a first avic.

Diversipes are no longer in the Avic genus, they are now Ybyrapora. There faster and more defensive than most avics...they tend to be good eaters, and medium growers. Slings are some of the most stunning tarantula slings in existence....adults are pretty, but they don't compare to the coloration and iridescence the slings have. A better choice than purpurea...but probably not the best choice due to their flighty behavior.

Versicolor is probably the hardiest of the Avic types (now Caribena), is one of the best eaters and faster growers....and adults are simply stunning. They're also very forgiving.

In reality there are a ton of spectacular Avics and their cousins, and most would be good choices...just not necessarily these two.....but the diversipes would be the choice if it has to be one of these two.

Please disregard much of the above if you have experience with Avicularia species.

I can only speak to Avicularia purpurea, since I have not personally kept Ybyrapora diversipes.
Avicularia purpurea are one of the slowest growing Avics that I have ever had. They don't have a great appetite, either. They top out at about 4", so they are on the smaller side.
But, they sure are gorgeous...

I always wanted one because of their color purple. I couldn't care less on size, but I have yet to find a reasonably good price for one, so now I'm just waiting. But this is one of the few T.'s i'm still waiting for in my "to own list". In terms of slow growth are they like Aphonopelma moderatum/chalcodes slow or no? If they grow faster than those two, then I would call "steadily patient growers" :troll:.

No, nothing like an Aphonopelma. My female went from a 1/3" spiderling in January 2017 to 3.5" in May 2019.

I had a Versicolor and I raised her from a sling to a huge female. I even breed her with a male it she had 130! Babys. So I have all I need to raise pinktoes. Just don’t know which from these two, because the guy who sells them has only them and the price for 4th instar slings are 11euro

Purps are smaller for Avics, gorgeous solid color. Males can mature quite fast, females a bit slow growing compared to other Avics.

Divers-- incredibly gorgeous as slings, most color fades as adults, they are not "docile" like a A sp metallica etc, a bit defensive actually.

I'd go purp any day again over divers.

My male purp matured VERY fast. All the stories I read about them being slow growers were not true in my care, temps constant 68-74 (night/day). I didn't even feed a lot. They are an Avic, much faster than Apho.

I have a juvenile A. pupurea female, and she is growing very slowly compared to my other Avicularinae. A bit more skittish than some others, but still gorgeous and one of my collection favorites.

Y. Diversipes is also beautiful. I definitely agree with the above comments regarding defensiveness. Mine is the only Avicularinae in my collection I have received threat postures from. During rehousing, had the same (crazy) behaviour as my P. gigas, only it moved a little slower.

For only 11euro - I would be picking up multiples of both species. Both species are more than double that price in Canada for spiderlings. I think the purpurea is usually around $30cdn and the diversipes are around $45cdn.

I've raised 3 A. purpurea to sub-adults. If you get one, keep it dry - I don't even have water dishes in their enclosures, I just give a splash of water in their webs 2-3 times a week (I double that in winter when humidity drops). Mine have always been good eaters too - they would sometimes take roaches right out of the pill bottle I use to place feeders. As they've matured they have become more shy, but not too bad.

Can't tell you much about raising Ybyrapora diversipes - mine was already a sub-adult when I got her. She's quite shy but still a good eater.

I chose the diversipes over any other avic..

It's only 1/4 inch but it's fast! Faster than any of my other "avic" slings and so far, the only one that got further than my table during an escape bolt when housing it..
