This adorable little lady is the newest addition to my growing "zoo," a charming little captive bred Tokay gecko (Gekko gecko). She is amazingly calm - no hissing, no barking, no attitude whatsoever. I really lucked out with this one. :) Much love to my aunt Karen who made this new addition possible.

More pics to come - I'm already enamored.

Edit: Anyone have suggestions for a name?

Thank you, and ditto! :D I've been wanting to get some sort of Gecko for a long time, and I saw this girl at my LPS a little over a week ago when I went in to get crickets. At that point I didn't have any spare cash to pick her up, and I didn't know much about that specific species aside from the fact that they can have an attitude, so I made a decision to do lots of research and hope she was still there on payday. Thankfully a card from my Aunt came the day before yesterday with cash and well-wishes and I took it as a sign. ;)

I am still amazed by her temperament though; when I went to take her out of her box I was expecting hissing at the very least, but no such thing. No gaping or barking either. She just casually jumped from the box into her new home. With that in mind, I'm thinking I'm going to name the little fearless wonder after my favorite character from Avatar: The Last Airbender. Toph Beifong. :D

Hahahs funny name...cb Tokays are usually a lot more chill than the WC, they associate us with pleasant things like juicy crickets and slightly cool mist in the hottest part of the afternoon..(I mist Tokays 2 times a day..in the afternoon and at night) BTW..cb toks can be nervous at times so be prepared for a bark or quick head snap if you startle her.. The biggest thing with interacting/ handling tokes is to go in slow with confidence.. Never grab them by the back of the head. I go in slow and slide a finger under them between the neck and front leg and slide the rest up under there body and lift them slowly..some will walk on you, some just sit there none like to be restrained..its good to hear that you did your home work before buying this species...people often make careing for these guys way more difficult than it is! Hopefully you can build a relationship with your toki and spread the word that these gems deserve a better reputation and a larger spot in the hobby...PS they love tight bark hollows with sphagnum moss in them!

Thank you, the tips are greatly appreciated. I'm giving her a bit of time to settle in right now, but next week I'm going to start getting her used to me. A few of the articles I've read so far recommend offering soft fruit, fruit-based baby food and/or applesauce as treats - one suggested putting a bit of applesauce in my palm and letting her lick it to help her associate my scent with pleasant things, like you said. Do you know if this works?

Now that she's settling in the attitude is beginning to come out, but as 14pokies said it's all barking and threats. At this point I'm not even trying to handle her, just getting her used to having my hand in the tank with her. She'll be getting her first handling whether she likes it or not near the beginning of the month when I do some rearranging of her enclosure to make room for her new hide.

It looks very similar to this one - there's just enough room to stuff some moss in there and still leave room for her to squeeze in.

Had a royal personage, a tokay, perched high on the wall of the porch last night. Haughtily gazing down as the cats went frantic, assured of her safety. I'm sure it enjoyed every minute.

None of mine have ever showed interest in baby foods..I tried mushed bananas a few times and crested gecko diet too and none ate it..I try to vary there diet tho..I feed crickets, roaches, super worms (from tonges or a dish) , and moths during the summer months when there abundant..try the baby food and applesauce who knows maybe yours will like it...Kevin Mccurley did a great article for reptiles magazine on Tokays a few years back..its a great read and can be found online! I have worked with Kevin in the past he really knows his stuff so check out the article there is no better care info on this species!
