I just thought i'd share a few pics of my non-invertebrate pets. First up, my pair of Collared lizards (Crotaphytus bicinctores). These are really great pet lizards, much better that leopard geckos in my opinion, much more peronallity and a lot more active. When i first got these two they were in a bad way, but they have pulled through and i might have a go at breeding them in the spring.

Hi John,

yes, they really are great. Unfortunately the majority of the ones we get in this country are wild caught, so by the time we get them are underfed and usually loaded with internal parasites. Although i did see a few captive bred ones for sale recently, so i can only hope they become more common in the future.

Cheers,

What kind of setups do collared lizards require? are they also strictly insectivorous?

Wow some of the pet trade collard lizzards easily give Leopard Geckos a run for the money in terms of bright colors.

Yup, they require a basic desert set up. I am currently keeping them in a 2' by 1' tank, but it is only temporary, as i will be moving them to a 4' viv soon. A minimum requirement normally for a pair would be 3 square feet of floor space. I keep mine on sived playpit sand, and they need a UV light as well. The temps also need to be quite high, up to 40 degrees celcius in the basking spot. Other than that, yes, they are insectivous, i feed mine a mix of crickets, mealworms and roaches.

these are by far and away my fovorite lizards, they are small, easy to keep and really fun due to the fat the are so active, always leaping around and exploring.

Here is a good care sheet.

Cheers,
