HA! In your second picture, it looks like a bug episode of "COPS". "Hold it right there buggy! Put your leeeegs in the air!" The one where they are on the red thing. Hahaaa. I've never seen those black and white hornets around here. I thought about digging up a Yellow jacket nest in the winter and putting it in a clear container inside the house. Then running a tube from the container to the outside somehow so I could watch them. But, I think about doing allot of things and end up not doing much. I dug up a big nest one winter. Had some big females on it. I still have it.. may take a pic later. Thanks for showing the pics. I respect hornets. I've been stung many times. I see the ones on the nest on guard in one of your pics. I've been bumped before without being stung. Thought it was just an accident until I saw a show about bees and hornets. Sometimes they will just give you a bump/warning.

Nice pics. Especially that with flying insects.

In the first picture I think it is Polistes vasp.

The yellow and black wasps are the introduced (from Europe) Polistes dominulus or the "European paper wasp". The black and white ones are indeed what we Americans call "hornets" but they are in fact just a large species of "yellowjacket" Dolichovespula maculata . True hornets belong to the genus Vespa and are old world in origin, although the "European giant hornet" Vespa crabro was introduced here and is doing quite well.
