A cat adopted me

So like a month ago a rough looking tom cat made friends with me, I've since named him Kitty Amazing. I saw him two months ago out of nowhere and it was only from a distance and I remember saying to my husband "ehhh that cat looks rough, I'd never touch it." I wasn't being serious about not touching but it was dirty and had wild eyes and by wild I don't mean crazy, its eye are just creepy vibrant. So I continued to see the cat here or there but it was always off in the distance and really cautious. Then one day when I was out with my husband and our dogs and the cat approached me and at first I kept my distance but he clearly wanted some attention and food as he was pretty sunken looking.

I am feeding him and providing him with an outdoor retreat on the back porch that I made out of a storage bin and a blanket. He used to just come around when the sun was setting but now he stays in the yard 24/7 which is fine since it keeps him from pooping in the neighbors yards so they are less likely to complain. He has put on some weight and his fur is looking better, he is a good cat even if he looks like he's been through the ringers. I'd have brought him in but we have cats and dogs so it's not happening until he goes to a vet. I actually have an appointment to take him next Friday to get him vaccinated and tested for a few things that I wouldn't want him bringing into the house if he comes in. He looks to be fixed already so I'm wondering if he was lost or more likely abandoned, I'll have the vet look into it and if he isn't then I'll get it done.

I'm trying to figure out how he got in our neighborhood as he just showed up and I was told by my dad that someone dropped some trap neuter release cats off here to live but I've hit a dead end there. Seems strange that someone would tnr strays then put them in the middle of a new place with nobody to help them survive so who knows what really happened. Either way he's my responsibility now and everyone is starting to warm up to him. My dad is already wanting to let him in the garage so hopefully he gets a clean bill of health and can be slowly introduced to the household, all of our cats are spayed females.

The only problem I've noticed is one of the neighborhood tom cats tries to eat his food at night and they get into it. I pick up the food at night now and the other cats seem to leave him alone which is good since the noise can bother people and nobody wants them fighting especially me. Kitty Amazing looks to be an older boy and his eyes still kind of freak me and my family out, they are bright amber with rich brown flecks throughout them and they look like they belong to a demon or something. He is black and white with a little brown on one back leg and he has a cute pink nose and his ears are a bit tattered but I think he's kind of cute now that I've gotten to know him.

So I've said everything there is to say about Kitty Amazing, sorry if it was long and boring :) Whatever happens with him he will have someone to watch his back and get him fixed up and he will always have a warm place to sleep be it in the house or garage if he just can't adjust to being a 24/7 indoor cat. Before anyone suggests the humane society, I thought that through already and I've decided he'll be better off here as I am willing to pay his vet bills keep him warm and fed and hopefully bring him inside full time. Being an older rough looking cat that may or may not have any litter box training which has been outside for who knows how long isn't going to do well in a contest with the loads of cute kittens and adorable house cats who's owners couldn't care for them anymore. I just don't want to sign him over not knowing if they might decide to put him down, there are already to many cats and dogs at the shelters.

Congrats on the new addition and best of luck transitioning him into a housecat. If his eyes are really bright and striking he may not be as old as you think! Would love to see some pictures of the little fella.

Here he is

Here's a photo, it's the only one where we got his face. . . The eyes aren't as bright here but I still think they are wild. I'll try for more photos :)

This site will help you with everything you need to know about caring for a stray cat, there is more than just feeding and shelter involved. The site helped me I care for strays too. I have a cat identical to yours except mine has green eyes. http://www.thecatsite.com/f/9/caring-for-strays-and-ferals
Thanks so much! I'm willing to put in the time and money for this little guy, I let my vet know he was a stray and needed vaccines, dewormed, fixed if not already and I'm going to test him for stuff that my cats could get from him if they are ever allowed to interact. I'm looking at a $200 vet bill so far but that's okay, my only issue is the neighbors it's not that anyone has said anything it's that someone will eventually. If he can't come inside I am looking at ways to set up a covered enclosure for the back yard like the cat runs I've seen online. I wanted to make one anyway so my cats which are strictly indoor can have yard time. We are putting in a fence by August so why not cat proof it to keep him in at night and keep the other neighbors cats from fighting him and trying to take his food. If he can't come into the house then he'd have access to a warm hide in the garage along with litter box and food and water.

My vet takes strays and even has a feral that lives somewhere in the back of her clinic and cares for only cats, she's amazing and I'm hoping she can give me info on how to proceed. Most vets have one lazy cat sleeping on the counter in a basket, she has like 5 or 6 and there are cat posts and toys all over the place lol. Last time I took my cat Moki to her she needed to test her urine for crystals and Moki refused to go for them and she didn't want to stress her by forcing it so she just gave her a room to chill in for the whole day so she'd pee. Sorry I am rambling lol.

I'll update this after we go to the vet on Friday, hopefully he's not to unhealthy, I noticed he's missing some teeth on the bottom.

Took the kitty to the vet yesterday, he got a pretty clean bill of health and did really well being handled so much. Even though he's missing some teeth the ones he does have look really good, he also has a lot of scabs all the way around his neck which the vet thinks is allergies after checking for fleas and lice. His ears are a bit dirty but no mites thankfully he is also already fixed which I figured but wanted confirmed. He got his vaccines, de-wormed and got his nails trimmed. Our vet told us that he seems to be an old boy and his eyes are not great do to old age, she also told us we would be okay to bring him in to our home. So I talked it over with my dad and he agreed that being inside would be the best for the old fella so he can live in comfort. We have him in my bedroom with a big litter box, food and water as well as comfy hiding spots and toys. We brush him daily to remove the crusty skin and he is also on antibiotics. Hopefully he will transition in with the other animals easily, so far he's been really relaxed and he likes to sleep on the bed with us and doesn't fuss if he's left alone. I think he enjoys the solitude since he doesn't have to watch his back 24/7 now. My husband named him Ghost and when we get our own place he's coming with us as an indoor only kitty. :)
