I caught a Dekay's brown snake a while back and was just keeping her for a little bit but planned to let her go eventually. Well i went to that today and i noticed about a dozen young in there now with her. Should i let her go babies and all? or should i try and take of mother and young? let me hear some thoughts

yeah but in the best interest of the babies if you are not used to raising them let them go imo

I didn't see where it says he doesn't know how to care for them but if that is the case Id have to agree to let them go. Imo thats what I would do anyway

yeh i was thinking of setting them free theres a nice provincial park near me, nice woodland and grass land for them, and tons of wild life. I hope they all do well. Thanks for the opinions.

I'd release them all now in the same spot I captured the mother so they would all be in the home range of the mother. If you relocate them outside that range the odds are the mother for sure will not survive the winter.

No thats the main reason i took the mother in the first place because she was caught in a heavily populated area in a park downtown that i work in, its not the nature type park more the beautiful waterfront walking type. Im going to bring them out of the city and to a nice national park, if i release them where i caught the mom they will for sure all die, theres no cover and tons of birds.

Studies have shown a 95% death rate when snakes have been moved from their home range due to an inability to find a suitable place to spend the winter. Do what you want but I would consider she has survuived in her home range to adulthood and translocation would only give her a 5% chance to survive another winter.

im almost certain she was just passing through to find a place to have her young because if you saw this place you would understand. Trust me there is not a single place for her to winter there it is in the dead centre of the town, i don't know how snakes fair in concrete jungles, but i don't think its to well. The place i intend to bring her there is plenty of places for her to winter im sure she will find one and not become one of the statistics. The place a fund her really is no place for a snake, we heavily fertilize it, and we use herbicides and other chemicals to keep everything looking tip top an nice for all the people walking though.
