I caught a small frog (one of last years hatch by the size of it) when mowing the lawn. I have taken one of it's back feet off at the ankle.
Any amphibian experts out there who can give me any advice on how to give the poor little thing a fighting chance of survival?
At the moment I have it in a bug box (the kind you buy crickets in) which has been sterilised and thoroughly rinsed. It is lined with wadded damp kitchen towel to stop it drying out, and covered with a tea cloth to keep it shaded.
If it survives the night I will be suprised, but if it does, then what?
Thank you in advance.

sounds like it should be easy to heal up. Clean the wound, bandage it up, and it should do fine. Ive seen many frogs with missing legs or eyes, and they heal without any help.

Good luck

Keep the wound clean, and use Neosporin (withOUT pain relief)...it should heal up fine.

In addition to keeping the wound clean, also make sure the paper toweling stays very clean, change it at least daily, and used de-chlorinated water if you can. Good louck!

The morning after

Well I'm pleased to say it has survived the night. It seems quite chipper considering. It stopped bleeding after half an hour or so.

I have transfered it to a cricket keeper with and inch or so of water in the botom. It has a piece of cork bark and a stone o clamber on and hide under.

I'll try feeding it this evening (pinheads okay?) and if i eats I'll feed it up over the weekend and release it again on Sunday evening.

I'm not feeling quite so guilty now it has survived a night.

If it doesnt like the pin heads, try those tiny worms you find when digging around in the garden. Ive raise a lot of tadpoles (polly wogs) and theyve ALL prefered the worms to crickets... go figure..

Seems okay

Well the little frog seems okay. It munched it's way greedily through half a dozen pin heads, so I have released it back into the garden. Needless to say I shall be keeping an eye out for three footed frogs in the future :)

Thank you everyone for your help.
