I've been to southern Guatemala three time now, and keep hearing about the '6 step spider' According to the locals, once you are bitten, you have six steps before you drop down dead. I was also told that they mainly bite the burros and horses one the back of the hoof area. Does anyone know what spider they are talking about??

locals generally kind of suck when it comes to deadly native fauna

that being said, check out Siccarius "assassin" spiders =P

think... super recluse =P

edit:
crap, i think that might not be inrange of Sic's

maybe Phoneutria? wandering spiders. nasty neurotox

I can't seem to find any info on Siccarius spiders. Do you have any sites that talk about these??

i heard similar stories when i was in costa rica, except for the six steps, just very dangerous spiders that bite horses and cows, i think they were ctenids so they're most probable Phoneutria or smth like that, if it's not i'd really like to know what they are

I looked Sicarius up and it said that they only live in the southern parts of South America and Africa.

Guatemala is rather far away from this area....

Any other ideas??

UPDATE: A search on wikipedia showed ONE species that lives in Costa Rica and El Salvador. Sicarius rugosus. I can't seem to find other info though...

Like Cyan said, I would guess it is some reference to a Ctenid spider like the Phoneutria genus.

I did some research, and it looks like Phoneutria boliviensis is a very strong possibility, although there was no mention of them biting animals. It would make sense though as they wait on the jungle floor and will bit anything that it preserves as a threat ie. horses, cows, people ect. It would be nice to find some material that affirms that they DO bite horses.

Hi,

completely nonsense.

P. boliviensis is rather calm and reluctant to bite in comparison to other members of this genus.
Next to that it´s venom is considerably weaker than that of P. nigriventer to name just one example.

Greetings,

Stefan

sounds like a pretty bad fellow.

regardless of whether or not the "6 steps" bit is true, it could make for a cool movie.
