So at the beginning of January I purchased a gorgeous little RCF G. Rosea male, about 3.5 inch legspan, as a future date for my RCF girl. I figured at that size it would probably be a little while until he matured out, which was fine with me, since she's been in what I suspect is a premolt fast for a few months, and I didn't mind waiting, even if it was waiting a few years.
So last night I went in to check on everyone and feed, and saw that sometime between that morning and then my little boy Zaphod had molted! It was very exciting because its my first non-sling molt ever! He was already done and moving around, and I carefully pulled the molt out (most of it, the top of the carapace was separated and he threw threat poses and ran at me every time I tried to get it, so I left that part in). But looking at him in the dim red light, I noticed his pedilaps looked...suspiciously different. But it was late and I didn't want to stress everyone out turning on the regular light, so I figured I'd wait til today.
This morning I got a good look and confirmed it - the little guy who I thought was too small to really be 'sub adult' and about to mature out, has hooks and boxing gloves on! So my little guy has turned into a little man! His coloring is really nice too, I had no idea he had even been in premolt - I hadn't seen any noticeable darkening (though he had been hiding alot recently), he ate just a few days ago, and his colors were bright and beautiful when I got him just a month an a half ago!! SURPRISE!
Anyways, now I'm waiting for Flower to molt out, hopefully since she's been in kinda a premolt funk for about 3-4 months now she won't wait TOO much longer, but it hard to say for sure. Also need to start getting stuff set up in case I have success and get a sac out of them!
My camera battery is charging now to get pictures of his new clothes, but here's a picture of her and him - I'm hoping to get some pretty little RCF babies out of them! (Not that I'll have any idea if they'll be NCF or RCF for a year or 2 after they hatch, assuming I get a sac at all).
As soon as I get my camera charged up, I'll get some pictures up of Zaphod now!
My boy, Zaphod, when he arrived here just about 6 -7 weeks ago.
A decent, but not great picture of my girl, Flower. I didn't have the best camera at the time, and she hasn't been very willing to pose for pictures lately...
