Instead of starting a new thread each time I dig up a new critter, I have decided to post pictures of mystery friends in one, concise thread. Many of them will be common and easy, but I am, despite a long held fascination with CERTAIN species, new to general identification. The collective wisdom of the members of this thread will be invaluable.

I hope this method will help prevent any thread clutter I might have otherwise created.

So... can anyone tell me what I have here?

The first picture appears to be a female stag beetle, Lucanus or Psuedolucanus, based on head shape I'd guess the latter (although many people seem to have stopped using Psuedolucanus, but I wasn't aware they'd been combined).

The second picture is likely the larvae of a ground beetle (Carabidae).

ox beetles are rhinoceros beetles, look at my thread with my ox beetles, that must be some sort of stag beetle.

I had considered that the first might be a stag beetle. If so, should leafy vegetables and rotten wood debris provide adequate sustenance? Perhaps, for the second as well?

I really need a beetle book.

Fantastic. The co-habitation with pinheads was a good move then.

Rotten wood etc is good for larvae, but adult stagss eat sweet liquids and fruits (try banana) mainly. Females also feed on the grubs of other beetles. This may be to clear the cometition away for her own grubs, but some keepers offer zoophobas pupae as a suppliment to encourage egg laying.

Rearing stags is somewhat complicated, but check out the book on elephant stags available from www.elytraandantenna as in icludes sections on other US native stags and the rearing is likely simmilar if not identical.

Female stag..

236260,

The first is a female Lucanus capreolus. Species AKA: Reddish-brown stag beetle or Pinching Bug. It’s the most common US stag in the Lucanus genus (four total). Keep moist and feed banana or watered down maple syrup.
