I'm trying to figure out what kind of crickets I have here. The one on the right is VERY common, the one that swarms some seasons around here. But the other is less common. I found it under a rock and saw that it was different than the more common one. They are reproducing in a plastic tub with my Hissers. Anybody know the names of these two species?

It's true that one on the right is what people around "here" call a black field cricket, that's one of the probs with common names. Most people would call the one on the left a field cricket too but it's obvious to me that the two females are diff species. Maybe they are both diff kinds of what people call field crickets. OK Rep, I'll go check out that website, it's pretty popular.

Crickets

The brown one looks to be Gryllus assimilis aka Jamaican Field cricket. The other one is a different species of gryllus. I dont know what.

several Gryllus species

In Europe Gryllus bimaculatus is the black feeder cricket most commonly used. We also sold Gryllus firmus Florida sand cricket for a while, There is also another Gryllus I dont remember the name right now from the USA called the silent field cricket they do not chirp at all!

These chirp:mad:, but the male and female adults can't fly at all. I started out with one female in my Hisser cage not too long ago. Quite a few more now and I separated them today. Guess I'll give these Gryllus a try in this smaller box. Time to add some crates. Still don't know the species. I keep thinking I'm getting burned out but keep on going. Def want to thin out more.

Hey, cool, i didn't know that you're keeping them too. common black field crickets, right? They are really large crickets. The males have really big mandible and they FIGHT! I am trying to use artificial selection to create a larger strain.
