Playing Dead1

I never understood why playing dead was something natural selection actually favored. If I were out in the wilderness and I came across a snake and it suddenly went limp and played dead, I would totally be like "well darn it's already dead, might as well walk away kappa." He's just lying there on the floor! Free food!

Imagine walking up to a cow and it starts acting crazy and just keels over. Would you want to eat that cow? Hognose snakes put on a performance that's more about the way it is dying than just playing dead. They writhe on their backs giving the appearance of sickness or disease causing them to die.
