M. Balfouri - 1.75 inch

I snapped a quick phone photo before the rehouse,i hope this is good enough.
If you're correct, that would mean it would be the first female in my collection LOL
Thanks for the reply!
Fingers crossed for you! To be honest, I would be shocked if it turns out male as that is an incredibly feminine looking 'undercarriage' lol

It's anyone's call on ventral sexing M. balfouri. I'd lump these with OBT in terms of ventral sexing, meaning hit-or-miss on ventral sexing. Sometimes it's noticeable and other times it's not. Even now, I can't ventrally sex OBT and M. balfouri as easily in some cases. The regular/dorsal picture appears male to me, but this picture seems female?

Something on the dorsal image might be overedited (boosted contrast, reduced highlights and such things that skew the original colors of the photo),that made it look male? Anyhow here's an un-edited image from my phone.

I agree it is opinion based and often you'll get 2 different answers off 2 different keepers. The only sure way is with a moult.

I've never tried to sex young balfouri by looking at the dorsal side, so I'll leave it to Liquifin to help out in that area.

Whatever the result, when you do get a moult that you're able to sex, please can you update this thread as it will be a helpful resources for other keepers. 🙂

Will do! I'd be glad to contribute to the hobby that way :D

Quick edit, out of curiosity I just looked up the original photo you posted of the dorsal side and can see what @Liquifin means, as the carapace (and femurs) does look very blue. So I wasn't disagreeing with Liquifin, I just hadn't seen the photo lol

I'm going to stick with female though (for now lol)

i took another dorsal photograph now, however no editing now, straight from the camera.
Can female small juveniles have hints of blue on their carapace?
