I have no experience with building something like this, but I used to create natural looking aquariums with BTN backgrounds and one of the main thing was to hide the intake and outlet.
Just my thoughts.
It's more for practicality than aesthetics. You have to be down low to see them, so they don't bother me in reality. Maybe I would guide a ficus pumila to cover the pipes, but that when they grow up a bit more.
