Is this Aphonopelma steindachneri? This one is about 2", caught in east San Diego county near 33.078786, -116.800457. I have seen several adult males and one adult female with the same near jet black coloration with small red hairs throughout the body, but especially on the abdomen.
It looks like it to me, and would be most likely. I'm also from SD and this species seems to be one of the more common ones here. I've never been lucky enough to see one in the wild, though.

have you seen any other species in the county? I was reading through the aphonopelma revision last night and it looks like you can find a couple species in the Santa Ysabel preserve. It would be cool to hold a tarantula hunt there someday. Maybe this fall. It’s not far from where I live, I’ll bet it would be easy to find this species if you know what to look for.

I haven't yet seen any tarantulas in the wild here in SD. I've seen a few scorpions, solifugids, and trapdoor spiders, though. It would be really cool to see one. I have friends who've seen this same species out in Lakeside/ El Cajon area.

Very cool. Thanks for the heads up.
