Huh, "mosquito hawk" is actually one I haven't heard. Most people by me are convinced they're really big mosquitoes and need to be killed. I admit I have an irrational fear of them (I've gotten much better), but I still argue with those people because it doesn't deserve to be killed for a mistaken identity
@PidderPeets I don't like them because they get into my room at night, and they are so big and spindly, it's hard to get them outside without hurting them.
@OliverWhatever Luckily I've never had one in my room, but they get into my kitchen a lot. I always have to tough it up and get them outside because any other member of my family will kill them
Oh, I´m actually terrified of these! A huge spider? Not a problem, adorable! A snake? Yes please, can I pet it? A centipede? Lovely! A crane fly? Get that thing away from me as soon and as far as possible.
Poor old Tipulidae. Utterly harmless yet will send otherwise rational people into paroxysms of terror. Even tarantula keepers evidently! Also a prime example of why common names are bad news. I have to admit I haven't heard 'mosquito hawk' before, and I'm not sure this clumsy fragile gangling creature deserves such a cool name!
Loved all the comments.....thanks for the laughs! Yes we here have been calling these creatures mosquito hawks since I was a kid. I was told as a child these Crane flies hunt and eat mosquitos just like hawks do with their prey. Wether that is true or just a old myth I don't know, for in my 53 yrs of life, I have never, ever seen a mosquito get caught and eaten.
My apologies if my photo made some of you tough spider guys scream like little girls LOL
@BCspiderman7 They're completely harmless and I wholeheartedly acknowledge that, but their creepy spindly legs are terrifying and brittle looking and don't look like they should be able to support the weight of anything and it's just so creepy! I feel the same about cellar spiders and harvestmen for the same reason. But nonetheless, I still appreciate you posting the photo. Exposure therapy is a great way to overcome fear
