Mystery Craigslist Tarantula

Sold just this last weekend at the Bloomington IL "Show Me Reptile" show to a guy who's wife said NOPE and posted it for rehoming. No vendor name. Around 1 inch. No way is this what the label reads, he had to've been fleeced. Just trying to know what I'm dealing with if possible!
Ahh, so you're the one that snatched it up! 🧐 Haha, just being silly, I was thinking about it when I saw that ad. Hello fellow Illinois keeper!

Can I ask what makes you think it's not H. chilensis? Not questioning your thoughts, just trying to learn! I'm terrible with species ID.

Looks to be another of the batch of Thrixopelma pruriens that were passed off as H. chilense a couple years ago. See links here for some history...

Chili are dark gray with a red burst at the base of the abdomen, thrixopelma pruriens which is probably what this is, are gray but lack the red burst on the abdomen and have a gold/bronze/ green sheen to them. There is a huge difference in temperament too or there is between mine, my chili's comes out to see but they are cautious walk slowly and are overall gentle in their movements . My purines on the other hand is more like a phormictopus in attitude if it moves its food everything is done with speed and even the vibration of my fingers on her viv cause a food response.
Both are great in their own ways but definitely not the same t's 😊 I hope I helped, I am not a technical t person so apart from my own observations I can't give more info. I am sure some on here could tell you more in depth atomically correct reasons but I am not that clever lol 😆

Hello! Yeah, I am very close to the place and decided it was a good idea to make sure someone with experience took it. It could've ended up being anything, and thinking of an old world billed as one of the most handleable species for beginners... idk! Gave me shivers.

From the ad there wasn't really visual evidence that it wasn't H. chilense since the photos weren't great, but there were context clues. Specifically:
-the low rehoming fee that would've been getting this species for a song
-the fact that whoever sold it at that show didn't even have the updated name on it. Any vendor worth their salt would know about a high profile species like this having a name change.
-If a tarantula wasn't welcome in their home it meant the buyers very likely knew nothing about them or have read some "best beginner species" articles at most. They would've been easily tricked, and possibly too excited by the prospect of getting a spiderling with more size.

Surprisingly when I got there they did turn out to be exotic animal people with a dedicated reptile room, so between that and them not actually mentioning a species themselves in the listing, I think they figured out they'd been had and were looking to pass the buck. I'm sure they think themselves very clever for having "tricked" me LMAO.

Ah that all makes sense! I am glad though that someone knowledgeable nabbed it before another unknowing person could. Not a horrible purchase either imo, but I love the smaller species so I'm biased haha.

I agree! They're identical. Which means this particular spiderling has likely been intentionally misrepresented for sale at least twice, possibly three times depending on if the people I took it from had figured out they were lied to or not. It's bad that it happened once but shameful that the people who got taken with the original scam perpetuated it :( I might keep it just for the story honestly.

It seems the jig is finally up for that little one... Makes you wonder how many more people out there have T. pruriens that they still think are H. chilense. You probably need to name it Chili or something like that, lol.
