Brachypelma smithi - Female

This is a 6” inch female. Exported from Mexico and sold as captive born lol. Honestly I believe all the adult B. smithi that were sold from Mexico were wild caught specimens. I truly truly believe this.
Mine was allegedly imported from what I was told was the facility that breeds them in Acapulco (you can see it on the Andrew Smith Brachypelma documentary). It came with a number. I am friends with and trust the vendor. Do you think that the exporter in Mexico may have scammed them?

The same facility from the video also supplied a Mexican Import (with CITES) into the UK in Dec 20. I know a fair few people in the UK who got a load of these AF B smithi (incl. Myself).

They are supposedly captive bred adults but are offspring from WC and again supposedly, siblings were released back into the wild to replenish the WC specimens originally used for the captive breeding.

That's the back story behind the UK imports anyway.

The same happened with the vendor I sourced mine from. He had an extremely large import that included a little over 100 adults and many slings. The label with the ID number of my specimen looked the approximate age of my specimen.

I spoke with him about it for a long time previous to that because he was excited to make the arrangement for the import. The individual in charge of the facility invited him down for a tour.

I'm kinda jealous tbh

I would be jealous too. Would be amazing to see a facility like that. 🙂

The vendor receives confiscated B. smithi from the Mexican government. Therefore how would the Mexican government can determine that any adult female that are sold are captive born? I’ve owned hundreds of wild caught specimens from many different species, and many of these wild caught specimens have a “rough appearance” to them and are dehydrated. So, when my colleagues and myself received these captive born specimens they looked dehydrated and rough. I can’t imagine that the vendor would sell hundreds of these smithi’s as captive born. It takes many many years for these smithi’s to reach 6” inches, which a lot of them were. The vendor can easily sell wild caught specimens as captive born. Yeah the vendor has his facility that contains captive born slings and juvenile perhaps in large numbers. Though a large numbers of Brachypelma smithi as adults and as captive born? I think not. I would have to say absolutely not.

Also if these smithi’s were captive born they be properly sexed when sold lol. The first two imports the smithi’s were not properly sexed, specially the second import. The specimens from the second import 95% of them were males. We paid for females. Apparently the Mexicans exporter or his workers can’t sex a single captive born tarantula 🤣.

If this is true and the same confiscated spiders made their way to UK, then I live in eternal hope that there is a very very small chance of having a gravid female. 🤣👍
We can all dream right? Ha ha
